Free Music Notes for Blackfield IIFree Music Review: Once I rise inside... Hit: 5 StarsThe second Blackfield album Blackfield II has been in constant rotation in my Ipod for 3 days now. It's a brilliant album, even better than the unique self-titled debut album of Blackfield.
The album starts off with the powerful 'Once' mostly sung by Steven Wilson and Aviv joining in on choruses. It is a pretty heavy track considering the rest of the album.
The second song is 1.000 People, written by Aviv Geffen with beautiful lyrics (i can take a guess here saying the lyrics represent his insecurity on stage:'A thousand people yell, they're shouting my name, but i wanna die in this moment,i wanna die') mostly sung by SW again, with neat harmonies towards the end (and then the sky is filled with stars,i find a place inside my heart)...this song is lyrically one of my favourites on the album (and then i watch her close her eyes..it's only me that needs to cry.and if i stay with you,do you believe that we will pull through?)
Third song is the upbeat Miss U,this time mostly sung by Aviv about the end of a relationship ('tomorrow you'll be gone and i will miss you...i'm the one who's left behind...it's not that i try to blame...)
Christenings is the 4th track, originally intended for the album Deadwing and hence written and sung mostly by SW.It seems to be about a rejected celebrity (what happened to your guitar?and what happened to the prettiest star?can you still play the songs that got you so far?..i used to see you all the time on MTV..i guess you thought that's the way it would always be)
This Killer is a very mellow song that is another of my favourites with lyrics like 'you think you know me well.It makes me laugh because i don't know myself' the verses are sung by SW and they both sing the choruses.
My Gift Of Silence is sung by SW in a mesmerising tone of voice 'if i complied all my crimes and my lies into amnesty won't you come back to me?' with a comforting chorus 'don't blame yourself, don't change yourself,i just wanna be over you see and feel numb, don't hate yourself'
Followed by Some Day about someone's childhood and how it affects their later life. It's a quite mellow song.
Where Is My Love? follows,Epidemic is by far the heaviest song on the album again written and mostly sung by Aviv with slightly disturbing lyrics 'an epidemic in my heart, takes hold and slowly poisons me her will won't let me breathe...this love is slowly killing me for me there's no one else' about a breakup (You say there must be an end,but afterwards we'll still be friends,it seems so easy) and towards the end there's this screaming part probably done by Aviv,as i'm pretty sure that SW isn't capable of doing those kind of vocals..i may be wrong.
an upbeat song written by Aviv and sung almost 50% by SW and Aviv with lyrics like 'noisy happy people crossing streets from side to side..where is my love?'
End of the World is a profound way to end the album, great lyrics and melody alike...'we are an accident called human beings..we are slaves to our hopes and fears...' with the brillant ending by Aviv 'take this pill it'll make you dizzy and then it'll give you wings'
All in all,Blackfield II is one of the best things SW has ever done.Granted, the complexity of PT is not here, since the songs are barely longer than 3:30 each, but it still has soul and emotion and great melodies.
If you'll listen to Blackfield for the firt time, this is the album to get.If you already have Blackfield this is still the album to get!It won't let you down in any way.
Blackfield II PosterTwo years back and forth on the London-Tel-Aviv flight path, a mutual artistic curiosity, and a close friendship are the components that gave birth to Aviv and Steven's Blackfield project. The collaborative songs alongside songs written by each separately brought a unique meeting of cultures, which resulted in a sophisticated, melodic and melancholic rock album. Aviv and Steven spent the rest of 2005 writing new material and working on their own projects, but in early 2006 Steven moved to Israel for 6 months to enable Blackfield to work on a new album. As on the first album both songwriters composed original songs for Blackfield, but also a few of Aviv's songs previously recorded in Hebrew as a solo artist were selected and translated into English. This time the record was made in one short burst of activity (unlike the sporadic sessions for the first album that spanned 2 years). Using the now established 5 piece Blackfield band line up, the resulting album Blackfield II has a stronger sense of direction and power, and is described as "a collection of 10 perfectly crafted songs of beauty and melancholia, combining great hooks, sweeping strings, explosive guitars, and lush vocal harmonies." 2007 release, the second collaboration between Porcupine Tree leader Steven Wilson and Israel's Aviv Geffen. Over the past few years, Steven Wilson's Porcupine Tree have made the transition from a solo project to genuine international stars with their last album, Deadwing, selling over 100,000 worldwide. Aviv Geffen is Israel's leading counter culture rock musician. A huge star in his native country, while his outspoken political views have caused huge controversy his records have been greeted with equal amounts of adulation, earning him a string of gold albums. This record re-unites Aviv and Steven in the follow up to 2004's hugely acclaimed debut, which was hailed at the time as 'hypnotically effective' (Classic Rock, UK ****) and `another strike of genius from Steven Wilson' (Eclipsed, Germany). Blackfield II, recorded in Tel Aviv and London and produced and mixed by Steven Wilson, continues and expands on the band's orchestrated melancholic rock sound, combining great hooks, sweeping strings, explosive guitars, and lush vocal harmonies.
