Free Music Notes for Fires at MidnightFree Music Review: Come gather round people wherever you roam..... Hit: 3 Stars
"Village in the Sand" is a classic. A powerful mix of some good ol' riff-rock and ren. Not far behind are "Home Again" and "Written in the Stars".
As good as the aforementioned tracks are, "All Because of You" is pure cr*p. Mindless fluff. Should read "I-Have-a-Career-All-Because-of-You". Leave it home next time. Stick to cuts like the title track and "Mid-Winters Night".
And also lay off the Dylan classics. You're treading on sacred ground here.....
Free Music Review: not my cup of tea Hit: 2 Stars
well I have to admit that if a band always sounds the same then it would be a very dull world. The reason I start with that is because the reason I fell in love with this group was for the medieval/olden times sound that they often create. This CD has a few songs on it that capture that old time Medieval/Minstrel sound and it is delightful. Although the rest of the album's offerings are good, there is a lot of electric guitar and a certain "pop" music sound as well. It just didn't have as many songs that made you feel you were at a Ren fair. Oh well. They are still a great band, this just won't be one of their CD's I listen to very much.
Free Music Review: FIRES @ MIDNITE = CRAP Hit: 1 Stars
I enjoyed the departure from reality Ritchie took with Shadow of the Moon. Some of the most beautiful instrumental guitar music I've ever heard is on this album. I then got Under a Violet Moon and was majorly disappointed that there wasn't more instrumentals, but I can honestly say I liked 3 of the songs. Then this, this abomination came along. I thought long and hard about buying it--had major reservations; but to my sorrow, I had a brain fart and in a fit of hopeful spazmosity, bought the thing.
Candace Night has a pleasant voice, but she is not the vocal equivalent of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing. I doubt a female equivalent exists, with the faint possibility of either Lorena McKennitt or Enya. This album, however, is the Candace Night Show, with only a brief supporting role by Ritchie Blackmore. I didn't pay $18 to listen to Candace stroke herself, I was hoping for more of Blackmore's incredible guitar virtuosity. The tunes are sappy and so cloyingly sweet you almost expect to have to wipe off your CD after you remove it from the player. There are no moments of brilliance and darn few moments of non-mediocrity. I could only listen to this album twice before relegating it to the 'buy back' pile, if I can find a sap willing to take this steaming turd off my hands. I will never buy another Blackmore's Night CD and probably won't go see them even if they ever do make it to the West Coast (unless it's a really cool venue and the tix are super cheap). I'd give this a -5 stars, if I could.
