Free Music Review: Overall, a nearly perfect CD for Christmas Hit: 4 Stars
I won't rehash the earlier reviews because they all perfectly capture the highly enjoyable listening experience of Winter Carols. I recommend it as highly as they do. However, I have one major disappointment with it: "Wish You Were Here". Nearly all those purchasing this CD are presumably fans who already have their other works, so they already have WYWH on two of those earlier albums. Likewise, the only connection the song has with winter are a couple of references to snow. In other word, it's a nice song but it's not a carol, doesn't fit with the others, and seems like a effortless toss-in. There are wonderful medieval-flavor carols which they could have put in its place, such as "Here We Come A-Wassailing", "In Dulci Jubilo", "Gaudete" or "The Boar's Head Carol", just to name a few. This album is an excellent choice for Christmas. A bit more effort might have made it a classic.
Free Music Review: This is a Great Album! Hit: 4 Stars
This album was as wonderful as I had expected. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there were 2 things that annoyed me on the album.
1. The word Christ was never uttered in any of the songs. They changed all the traditional lyrics that mentioned "Christ" and replaced them with vague references. If they don't want to mention "Christ", perhaps they should go with less religious Christmas carols like "Deck the Halls" or "Here We Go Caroling".
2. I am not the biggest fan of "Wish You Were Here". I was disappointed to see they had included it on this album since it has nothing to do with Christmas. I would have loved to see them include "Greensleeves" instead. That way the song would have fit on the album AND they wouldn't have to mention Christ! :)
Overall, I do highly recommened the album to all, not just Blackmore's Night fans.
