Free Music Notes for Winter CarolsFree Music Review: very good, but Hit: 4 Stars
This is a very good Yule CD. Everything is great about it, except I found it a little short. but beyond that it is great. If you like Blackmores night, you will like this one too. If you haven't heard of Blackmores night, think accustic guitar with a beautiful voice, and midevil music tone.
Free Music Review: Good music, "PC" lyrics Hit: 4 Stars
I truly enjoy everything Blackmore's Night does. The music here is excellent, but someone took the trouble to remove the name of Jesus from the religious carols. I was very disappointed, not just because I am "religious," but because the carols are just not the same.
Free Music Review: Blackmore's Night Hit: 4 Stars
The new Christmas album from Blackmore's Night really doesn't break much new ground for the group BUT this is a great holiday album with different approaches to holiday music than the average Christmas carol presentations.
A great group. A great album.
Free Music Review: Disappointed Hit: 3 Stars
I am a fan of BN, but this disappointed me. I was hoping for more original ballad-y type songs. Too much was familiar.
Free Music Review: MAJOR OR MINOR? Hit: 2 Stars
I must admit that I was a bit surprised to hear that ol' sourpuss himself was gonna release a Christmas CD. After all, it's a happy and festive time of year and Ritchie's not exactly known for lighting up the world with a smile. But go figure....
My favorite track on the CD is their very own "Christmas Eve". It's amongst the best music and lyrics they've ever done. Why it's receiving little airplay is beyond me because it certainly deserves airplay. Not far behind is "Three Ships", the beautiful "Ding Dong" and "Lord of the Dance". All four are lively and possess strong melodies, which is a hallmark of all the great traditional holiday songs.
Not coincidentally, they are all in a "major" key. Where this project falls apart for me is the fact that half of the songs are in a minor key which is a favorite key of Blackmore. The minor keys tend to be more haunting, if not downright gloomy and dark. Not really in an uplifting or holiday spirit.
Ritchie mentions that the word "carol" means "dance". Well, the songs "Winter", "Wenceslas" "We 3 Kings" and "Emmanuel" ain't exactly toe-tappers. More like music to take a nap by. There are tons of better choices of material out there to be covered.
And what is that irritating instrument in the solo of "We 3 Kings"????? Ouch! Sounds like a goose who's being physically abused!!!!
And while I'm at it, the line in "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is "Christ the Lord" NOT "He is the Lord". We don't need to re-write the classics to suit anyone's political agenda.
Oh heck, I'm on a roll......lose the "Wish You Were Here" song. It has absolutely nothing to do with winter or the holidays. Not even close. The song stinks to begin with and Candy sings it like she's in a coma.
You're a great player, Ritchie. Give Jethro Tull's Christmas CD from a couple of years ago a spin. There are some absolutely brilliant instrumentals on there that will LIFT YOU UP.
Which is what the holidays are all about, isn't it?
