Free Music Notes for Blast: An Explosive Musical CelebrationFree Music Review: Absolutely incredible performance, you need the video too... Hit: 5 Stars
Blast! is Bill Cook's incredible effort to bring drum corps to the stage. Blast! originated as the Star Of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, which competed from 1985 to 1993. Today, the show is a smaller, stage-friendly adaptation with the same energy as its large football-field predecessor. While the music is wonderful and moving, you really need to see the performers to fully appreciate their work. The CD is a studio recording, while the video is a live recording of their premiere show in London. The show is about 90 minutes long, and the CD leaves out a few of the more visual performances, including 'Battery Battle' (a drum soloist feature, and 'Tangerinamadige' (a digederoo feature). These pieces are especially intended for live performance. Blast! is starting a Broadway run in April with touring performances planned. It is a striking production and should not be missed if you have the chance to see it live.
Free Music Review: An Uplifting Experience! Hit: 5 Stars
This cd show thats there is a life in music after high school and college for bands. From the opening song to the conclusion, this cd keeps you guessing as to what is coming next. If you haven't seem the video, I suggest that you do. The cd has all of the musical components, but the video brings all of it together. After having seem the video first, now I am able to place the movements with the cd when listening to it. This group of young people are a force to be reckoned with! There is mcuh talent and promise in all of them. A lot of hard work has gone into all of it and they are very deserving of the reviews that they have received. Congratulations to those behind all of the time, practice, and the final showstopping successes for bringing this all together. This cd is worth it! I can hardly wait to get to see it live!
Free Music Review: A must have for any marching band lovers Hit: 5 Stars
If you are a fan of marching band style music this is the CD for you. To truly appreciate the music you have to see the video of the performance that the CD gets its music from. It is some of the best Choreograph stage performance I have ever seen. It was like taking a field show putting it on a stage and taking it to the next level. Some of the more visually oriented pieces like drum battle are not on the CD. But the music that is on the CD is breath taking. The music its self consist of drums and brass music. Being a low brass player myself I was astounded at the talent of these musicians. The music its self is not original but Blast ads its own twist and really brings the music to life. If you are a fan of this type of music you should defiantly add Blast to your collection.
Free Music Review: Brilliant brass playing combined with perfect percussion Hit: 5 Stars
I saw "Blast" on TV (PBS), and attended a show in Boston at the start of their American tour, and was skeptical that "sound only" could do the performance justice. But at the Boston show I was struck at the vituosity of the playing. A french horn, trombone, and trumpet stood within five feet of me and I could hear the quality of the tone, the perfect intonation, and the sense of musicality in the playing. So I picked up a CD at the show and hoped that it was recorded well enough that I could relive the excitement and joy of this beautiful music. From the dramatic "Bolero" to the fiesty "Malaguena", this is one CD that should be in the collection of anyone who ever played brass or percussion, or just wished they could.
Free Music Review: A must for music lovers Hit: 5 Stars
Bill Cook and Star of Indiana have once again hit a home run with this one! From the drum and bugle corps, to brass theater, and now blast!, this ensemble has taken musical theater to a new level. But the show itself is one of the most difficult things to explain. If you take the rhythm of Stomp, add to it the excitement of Riverdance, the creativity of Cirque de Soleil and the musical virtuosity of the Chicago Symphony, then you're getting pretty close to what blast! is. Do NOT miss this show! If you can't see it live, buy the CD and the video tape. Star's brass line, percussion section and visual ensemble are without a doubt the best in the world. Don't hesitate! Get tickets for the show while they are still affordable.....
