Free Music Notes for Blaze Of Glory: Songs Written And Performed By Jon Bon Jovi, Inspired By The Film Young Guns IIFree Music Review: JBJ's best solo album Hit: 5 Stars
On BLAZE OF GLORY, inspired by YOUNG GUNS II, Jon Bon Jovi goes solo. This record proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jon deserves the band to be titled after him. BOG is just as good as any of the band's records, and better than a lot of them. In fact, there's no filler among these songs, every song memorable and well-composed.
"Billy Get Your Guns" is a fast-paced rocker, with a subtly different sound than the band's. It sets the baseline for the rest of the record, and as is often the case with Bon Jovi albums, it outlines the philosophy and message of the record, like "Let it Rock," "I Believe" and "Keep the Faith," a song that's absolutely critical to the whole, but most of the time not the best. "Miracle" is one of the best songs on the record, with great, meaningful lyrics and serious staying power in your head. The title track, "Blaze of Glory," is another gem, and fully deserves its place on the greatest hits album. "Santa Fe" is the best song on the record, with lots of Jon's best lyrics. The epic feel and the heightened emotion in Jon's voice can move you surprisingly deeply for what has been described as a "circus act." The vocals and the orchestral background are fantastic, and "Santa Fe" surely stands out among the great cathartic rock songs. "Blood Money" is another great song, and another example of how much easier it is to write great songs when you have inspiration from a movie (or a book, in my case. After floundering around for a few years -- I am thirteen, so not so long ago -- I wrote songs for a book I read and after that the creativity locked away in my head broke out and flourished. Am I getting off track?) "Justice in the Barrel" is a great song, although some people will find the very, very long intro boring. I found it catchy, in an odd, annoying sort of way. It's one of the record's highlights. "Never Say Die" is one of my favorites, a fast-paced rocker that fools you with the happy-go-lucky beat into thinking it's a happy song. Very catchy, and still managing to touch on serious issues without ever bogging you down. "You Got Me Now" is a little acoustic surprise with a very country-like sound, a relief from the tons of grief and sadness that is found on this dark record. "Bang A Drum" is an awesome power ballad about an outlaw finding religion. "Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin'" ends the record with a sad song about death and ruin, and one of the most powerful tracks on the record. Jon excels as a songwriter here, and goes out with a bang. Literally, as far as the movie's story goes. A loud bang. A mediocre and unnecessary instrumental, a minute long, finally ends it. "Guano City" isn't much to remember.
As a whole, BLAZE OF GLORY is the least flawed of the Bon Jovi albums, solo efforts and band records. There is zero filler except for a minute of "Guano City." Every other song is great vocally, lyrically, and pretty good as far as the playing goes. Although it doesn't come together as solidly as "New Jersey" or "Keep the Faith" because of the absolutely stunning songs that those records boast. If "Blaze" doesn't have the one or two completely mindblowing records that those two records (and don't forget "Slippery When Wet" has that virtue too) do, it still has the least filler and on average the best quality of songs. "Blaze ranks third place easily among Bon Jovi records. This is one to remember.
Free Music Review: One of the greatest albums ever! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a Bon Jovi fan since 1986 I think, but when I heard this album I was just blown away. This is not only my favorite Jon Bon Jovi album, but one of my all time favorites. I know Jon was inspired by the film in the first place but he just went so beyond that. I was living in the States when this songs became the soundtrack of everything that was going on with my life back then. The lyrics are very deep and can be applied to many situations in life, not just old western movies. Jon's singing is also one of the highest in his career, and you know he has very high standards. Each and every song on this record is so relevant and well written, it is just unbelievable that all of them fit so well in a whole package. Billy get your guns is a rocker that puts you in the right mood to listen to Miracle, I felt Jon captured a latin feel with this one, something that was not really expected. Blaze Of Glory, what else can be said? if you can't be touched by this one, you are probably dead already, The guitar solo is so perfect, Jeff Beck did an amazing job on this one (and the rest of the songs too), I mean, I love Richie Sambora, but he cannot top this solo on his performances with the band, Beck is a master and every note he plays goes so perfect with the song, he captured exactly what Jon was talking about. I think a lot of people over look the great contributions that the artists that played on this record did to the production. I mean, Jeff Beck's work on this one is huge, his tone and style make every song reach a whole new level, I love Beck's solo work, but when his great guitar talent is mixed with Jon Bon Jovi's singin and songwriting, it fires up a real magic that will last forever.
Blood money is a certain choice to play when you feel alone sitting on a mountain or something like that, it is a beautiful song and the lyrics are so powerful.
Santa Fe, I think words can't say enough about how I feel when I listen to this song, I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written, and that is a lot!! The lyrics are profound, meaninful and touching, and the melody, the singing, the arrangements, everything is just perfect on this song. I think Jon Bon Jovi will never be able to top this one because it just can't be better, there are just a few songs that you can say that have all the parts fitting perfectly, emotion, performance, lyrics, everything. I just can say no more about how great this song is.
Justice in a barrel is one of my favorites too, watch out that Jeff Beck solo, it starts on acoustic guitar and then goes electric with his classic tone, I just can't get enough of this.
To sum it up this is a record that you never get tired to listen too, and when you listen to it carefully it gets inside your feelings like no other. It is a shame that even Jon Bon Jovi seems to have forgotten this record, well, he's done some amazing job after this, but he hasn't achieved this level of greatness. There is a time in every songwriter's life that the light of music touches him or her very deep and achieves music heaven, I think Jon really did it with this one, it is too bad that this light don't shine the same way twice.
Free Music Review: Bon Jovi at his best Hit: 5 Stars
I just discovered Bon Jovi in the last month, and just in the last month realized that I did not know what it was like to feel truly connected to a song or an artist. I now own 10 Bon Jovi albums, including this one, and love every single one of them -- the band is fantastic, but there is something special about this solo album. No one should be allowed to put as much heart and soul into anything as Jon Bon Jovi puts into these songs. He shows that he is a brilliant lyricist and vocalist in all of his albums, but takes both his lyrics and vocals to an entirely new level here. The only band album that compares to this one as far as being deep, raw, and personal is These Days.
Standout songs for me:
"Santa Fe" - the most searing, devastating, excruciatingly beautiful song every written or sung. Jon's vocals alone will rock your world, and are combined with the most penetrating lyrics imaginable -- if this song does not leave you shattered then you are probably made of steel. You will feel the blood and sweat and tears that I can only imagine Jon must have shed writing and performing this song.
"Miracle" - beware, this song will sneak up on you. It has a deceptively light, salsa type of feel, but packs a huge punch. Just listen to the lyrics and Jon's voice and don't be deceived by the "your savior has just left town" -- this is song is upbeat and powerful and quirkily encouraging, you'll listen to it over and over again trying to put your finger on its charm.
"Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin'" - another hard hitter that will probably leave you on your knees, don't let the sedate tempo fool you. Jon can put a gravelly sob in his voice that leaves you tingling all over and completely heart-broken, have the tissues on hand.
"Never Say Die" - deceptively fun, upbeat rock style tune. Listen to the lyrics again, deep stuff. I never thought rock, even with a western flavor, could have so much power to touch.
"Blaze of Glory" - I can't say anything about this song that hasn't already been said. Deserves to be the title track and one of his biggest hits.
"Blood Money" - love, love the simple, bare-bones arrangement of this song. Short, thoughtful, all about Jon's voice, which really stands out.
I have left out alot of tracks -- but every track on this albums is worth listening to. If more people put this much of themselves into whatever they did the world would be a vastly different and probably much better place. Another reviewer describes Jon's singing on this album as "bleeding his heart out in every lyric" and I could not come up with a better description. If you love Bon Jovi, if you hate Bon Jovi, if you are alive... buy this album and prepare to be touched in a very raw, gritty, personal, authentic way. You will never listen to music the same again -- you might never be the same again.
Free Music Review: On of the few CD's I feel naked if I don't own. Hit: 5 Stars
Everyone has a few CD's they just feel like they aren't whole, or clothed if they don't own them. For me Blaze of Glory is one of those. I got my first copy of this on cassatte way back when. I was about 14. I knew who Bon Jovi was of course, but had never been a huge fan, I'm still not. I unwrapped it, and popped it into my tape deck. I was floored. I loved every single song on it. I'd never had that before. So here's my breakdown of what I think of each song.
1. Billy Get Your Gun - Ok, this one is just very... Cocky... I think is the right word. I always liked this one for when I felt sort of upbeat and carefree. That and it has a very cute meaning to me, my best friend in Jr. High and I were obsessed with the movie, and had seen it 20-30 times in a summer. One night I put this tape in when we went to sleep, and the second time through the tape, when it says "I'll make you famous" my friend woke up screaming for Billy not kill her. 2. Miracle - This reminds me of alot of those times in life when you think nothing will go right, and that it won't ever. But shows that you do need to hope, that some one will care and try to help. 3. Blaze of Glory - This one has always reminded me of half of my family. The way they live their life in the rodeo. That do or die attitude in a way.. 4. Blood Money - Just a sad song of lost friendship and betrayal...really sad. 5. Santa Fe - Slow, sad sounding, very... westerny to me. 6. Justice in the Barrel - The opening to this makes it for me. Lou Diamond Phillips chanting. 7. Never Say Die - An upbeat song, very optimistic. 8. You Really Got Me Now - This one is just sorta bluesy and quirky, I like it! 9. Bang a Drum - This one is my favorite of all of the songs. I don't know why it just touches me. 10. Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin' -It starts out with Kiefer Southerland, which is a bonus. And then it gets all dark and saddish... good stuff. 11. Guano City - A bit of the score from the movie, I can't ever place where it goes. I don't think it goes to the Guano city scene, but I still like it none the less.
Free Music Review: I can feel him Hit: 5 Stars
I'm described by my friends as someone who is not much into music, which is probably true. But, I listen to Bon Jovi because I feel that he sings about a topic because he feels it.
He tackles various issues with his songs and I can relate to the way he expresses his feelings. I've listened to most of his albums (except the last one or two). They are all good.
However, there is something about this album and "These Days". I cannot remember the number of times that I've listened to this song when I'm down. If I were a song writer, I would have expressed my feelings with these songs and I probably would have sung with the emotion that Bon Jovi has delivered them. The songs in this album touch me. They make me cry because I feel touched and then give me hope.
In my humble opinion, there is no better album out there by any other artist. If you are struggling in some aspect of life, listen tto this album. If you are heart-broken, listen to "These Days".
How can one not get inspired by these lyrics below. It makes me wanna get up and fight when life knocks me down.
Never say die, never say no,
You got to look them in the eye and don't let go.
When it's your own blood you'll bleed,
And your own tears you'll cry.
When you're brought up to believe,
That it's the strong who survive......
Never say die.
Yeah, we could run like lightening, through the pouring rain,
And we'll be standing like a solider, who comes marching home again.
They ask what it is that I want written on the gravestone where I'll lie,
Tell them it's just my bones that died there, so save the tears they'll cry.
My spirit is still riding somewhere in this night,
When it's these three words that come to me, as I kiss this world goodbye.
