Free Music Notes for For My FriendsFree Music Review: Solid from Start to Finish Hit: 4 Stars
This album is very solid from the minute you start listening, until the final note has faded from your ear drum. The songs in-between are both catchy and full of that grunge rock sound that enticed so many people in the early nineties. There is enough substance here to keep you coming back for more than just one play through. After more than a dozen times hearing the album, I am still discovering new notes and lyrics that I missed somehow in previous sessions.
This is really a must have for those who loved the era from which this band originally started. Blind Melon has come a long way through a tough journey, but they have stayed true to their roots and produced a fine album.
Free Music Review: Welcome Back My Friends Hit: 4 Stars
Although Blind Melon will always be known for the amazing lyricism of fallen band mate Shannon Hoon, I can't really find anything bad about this cd. Sometimes the love of what you do overshadows the loss of a key element in a band, so there's nothing left to do but get back on the horse. If nothing else, Shannon's legacy will still be passed on to generations to come through the live show, and the evolution of the rest of the band will be displayed through new music. At the very least, the guys aren't stagnating like many other bands from that era. Welcome back, guys, and I hope to see you on tour back home in Indiana.
Free Music Review: Good Start Hit: 4 Stars
This is their first CD in a very long time. And while no one can replace Shannon this new guy isn't half bad. However, there is a few disconnects in the songs. I think more time together will fix these little wrinkles. The second CD will really be the one that tells if this band will be staying or not.
Free Music Review: Good effort Hit: 3 Stars
Blind Melon For MY Friends is a decent album. Musically it stands up to Soup and the self titled debut. WHere this album misses is the lyrics. Travis Warren's voice is great and live the new line up are incredible. However the lyrics on this album are borderline dreadful.
"When you fall back down
and you lost your crown
get back up, walk around
turn that frown upside down" from Wishing Well.
"I went drivin' today
couldn't help but think of how
you're with somebody else
and now you've got a child
It's been a few years
Since I saw you last
I know you're doin' fine
you don't miss the broken glass" from Tumbling Down.
The lyrics are from the Lenny Kravitz school of rhyme scheme and simplicity. The lyrics truly knock off several stars from this otherwise potentially great album.
Free Music Review: Not Bad For 1st Attempt in 12 Years! Hit: 3 Stars
This album is a an excellent attempt to start where they left off. Tracvis Warren's voice is eerily familiar. The songs are above average, but none have potential to be a hit single. The best song on the album is track 8, which I feel would be their only shot for radio play. There are some other great tracks on the album, but none that will me memorable. The lyrics are ok, but you will never be able to recreate the lyrical genius of Shannon Hoon. He was a true poet. Overall, I am pleased with the album, but on their next one I would like them to return to the sounds of old. I thought the album was a little too safe for me. They need to take more risks on the next one. Nice to have you guys back though.
