Free Music Notes for For My Friends

Free Music Review: 3 Stars

all i got to say about this album is this.Way to feel shannon hoons shoes travis warren.and ohhhhhhhh yeah one more thing i would not go as far as saying this album sounds like soup (i guess your a little cocky travis) it sounds nothing like soup (to me).But still i put this album in 2nd place out of 4 blind melon albums (soup, for my friends, nico, self titled). this album is good but if you want blind melons best buy soup (4 stars).

not a huge fan of this band but i still like em.

Free Music Review: Good effort but...
Hit: 3 Stars

I loved Blind Melon in the 90's and have and love all their albums. Having said that what I didn't like about this album is the lack of energy that this album had. Old Melon seemed reckless and that gave it extra energy, this seems too controlled in comparison. Anyway, it seems like a good album but it was not what I was looking for.

Free Music Review: Somewhat pleased
Hit: 3 Stars

Trying to fill Shannon Hoons footsteps is a high order to fill. Did a decent job but didn't have the same blind melon feeling. Better luck next time.

Free Music Review: Lacking
Hit: 2 Stars

I bought this CD because I heard a song on the internet and it really reminded me of the old Blind Melon. I loved the old band dearly, and I did not expect this CD to come close to the old stuff. But when I listened to the CD I was surprised, at first. The band can still play music the same ole way, boucing between hopping tunes with great guitar mixtures to the eerie sounding tunes. The new singer sounds enough like Hoon that you get the genuine feeling you are listening to THE Blind Melon. It all seems to good to be true, AND it is! Once you get down to it and start really listening to the lyrics, you find that they are absolute garbage. There are no more "got sewage fruit and its growing out back from roots and i dont know if they belong to me....and a rummage sells some rubbish to me, but if i could buy the sky", no more "schuffle can to can, no body really gives a damn, for every living day i give myself a hand." No more of that drowning sorrow balanced with far off hope. No more pictures of that rare and beautiful life of Indiana. The new lyrics are laughable at best, something the 14 or 15 year old would enjoy and then forget in 2 weeks. The more I listen to the CD, which is not much, the more it becomes apparent that it was just a music company's money making scheme.

Free Music Review: missing Shannon
Hit: 2 Stars

The lyrics on this album wallow in generality and cliche: they spoil the music. I'm not sure what part Travis Warren played in composing the songs (since they are all "written by Blind Melon as One"), but as far as I can tell, the boys are missing Shannon Hoon. Warren's voice isn't bad, but it just points up how extraordinary Mr. Hoon was. I understand why Melon went with a guy who could ape Hoon; after all, the fans will expect to hear all the old, great songs when they tour. Unfortunately, the most this album has done for me is remind me that Blind Melon (in their original line-up) is one of my favorite bands. After a couple listens to "For my Friends," I dug out the Shannon Hoon albums and had myself a good old time. The raw energy and specificity of Hoon's language, combined with the songwriting on those first three albums, outshines anything on this latest album. Stick with the Hoon stuff.
