Free Music Review: Nothing Special...

Blind Melon is one of the most underrated bands of the `90s, if not of all time. They're viewed by the general musical community as one-hit wonders. Any Blind Melon fan knows the truth. Blind Melon was an immensely talented band with a troubled lead singer. This latter truth was never more apparent than it was on "Live at the Palace."
I've seen live videos of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon before and they sounded great on many of them. This is NOT one of those. The band itself is in top form, but Hoon was clearly in bad shape. He sounds like he's got severe strep-throat on this album and is struggling to sing at all, let alone well. Hoon typically sang in a higher range; on this album his voice is deep, throaty, and he sounds like he's in pain. Oddly enough, some of the recordings sound OK and his improvised lyrics on "No Rain" are entertaining but nothing here outdoes or holds up to the studio versions. BM fans or completists might wanna check it out, but it's nothing special.
