Free Music Notes for The Mark Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back)

Free Music Review: With bands like these, we need more enemas!
Hit: 5 Stars

Given the music releases I have reviewed, it seems unlikely that I would consider reviewing a group like Blink 182, but hey, they form yet another part of my variegated musical diet, and I have to admit that their ferociously foul-mouthed toilet humor reached its long arm and grabbed me.

The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show brings to light proof that the boys put on one heck of a live show. Much of the material comes from Enema Of The State, nine of twelve songs to be exact. The other ten songs are selections from Cheshire Cat ("Peggy Sue"), Dude Ranch ("Voyeur", "Untitled"), and Buddha, or songs that are exclusive to this album.

Apart from their trademark punk rock, there's the constant verbal repartee between Mark and Tom, with the latter getting the lion's share of putdowns. Examples: Mark's inclusion of "Tom has sex with guys" after "Aliens Exist"'s the closing line, "twelve majestic lies." Mark's comparing Tom DeLonge to Tom Cruise in Born On The 4th Of July, where he's "handicapped, retarded, and stupid, and nobody likes him, and he s**ts all over himself." Tom's dialogue on the #1 cause of bad breath. On "Voyeur," prior to doing the bass solo, Mark demands oral sex and oxygen to the stage, with Tom adding, "and maybe some of those male chromosomes."

The song "Family Reunion," not available on any Blink album, but only on a punk compilation, is finally available here. The song clocks in at barely half a minute and the lyrics? Well, why not call it Blink 182's list of words that can't be said on TV, a lá George Carlin's list in the 1970's?

The animated album cover is another treat. Apart from Blink, there's Janine, the model from Enema, six-armed, mono-ocular, green aliens, a wizard, a man in a banana suit, a blonde with the words "Blink Me" tattooed on her breasts, and more--it's a party in full swing. This may become an album cover classic in time.

After "Man Overboard," there are twenty-nine tracks composed of even more Mark-Tom dialogues, including more putdowns, profanities, and crude jokes.

Whether you like this CD depends on whether you like this music or can stand Tom DeLonge's whiny voice, well apparent in the songs and dialogue. I can handle it, because they put on one heck of a show.

Free Music Review: BEST LIVE ALBUM 5 Stars

I was really taken aback at the quality of this album. Sure, I was all happy to think that Blink would come out with a live album, but I sorta had a feeling that it might suck. This is definitely not the case. Blink 182 sound GREAT live, better than some studio songs. I really the "Family Reunion" "Blow Job" and their version of "Uncle Fu***" at the end of track 18 or 19. "Man Overboard" is classic Blink, with their trademark sound, healthy dose of humor/vulgarity in their lyrics, and a catchy drum beat. It's a real treat to hear all these songs live. Although I miss some Dude Ranch tracks (Josie, A New Hope), it's a great mix. I'd rather take this cd with me than all of their albums. However, there are a few problems: Most noticeably, the abundance of Enema tracsks-who are you trying to please, your teenybopper fans who'll throw you away, or your loyal punk fans? C'mon, who needs another version of the worst Blink song ever (*cough* All the Small Things-the song is ok, but the video is better) but the version of What's My Age Again is good, because of the added banter thrown into the song. ("heres the slow pretty part!") Actually, that's the only bad thing that really stands out. Another plus (a big one at that) is the humor thrown in. I swear, every time I hear it I still laugh. (I love it when Mark says, "this is about my herpes-its called Dont Leave Me") The extra 39 tracks rule as well. This is definitely up there as one of the best albums of 2000. I'm not a teenybopper-I've been with Blink since the Cheshire days-it's sad to see these guys get grouped with faceless boy bands and "divas", and to have their mugs on Teen mags. However, some of this is self-inflicted-just say NO blink! (as in NO to any interviews/photo shoots with teen magazines, NO to another MTV appearance, NO to another album full of pop-as in Enema-which is good, but, y'know) So, in short, this album rules and you don't like it I don't like you.

Free Music Review: Pure Blink 182.
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow. This is a fabulous CD. Right off the bat, you realize what you have- a CD that totally embodies what the band Blink 182 is all about, that being girls, potty humor, and punk rock. The boys do great live versions of some of their best hits, "Dammit," "All the Small Things," and "Dumpweed" standing out, though I was disappointed that their early hit "Girl Next Door" wasn't included. That aside, they did a great job on this CD. They sound great live, and aren't one of those bands that needs numerous studio tricks in order for you to like them. Mark's bass solos are great, and make the songs that much more of unpredictable and fun ride. Tom's recognizable lead guitar chords jump out at you, and as you hear them a smile comes on your face knowing what the song is. Travis's drumming is as phenomal as ever, never missing a beat and rocking hard. These three big kids mixed together have a style that is impossible to resist. They blend their love for girls, bathroom jokes, and their token punk rock in one desirable package. A real treat on the CD is their latest single "Man Overboard." Totally Blink's style, it has all the guys at their best, with catchy lyrics, plenty of times for each one of them to shine, and an overall tone that's impossible to resist. Another aspect of the CD fans will love are the last minutes of the CD, devoted entirely to commentary made by Mark, Tom, and Travis at their live shows. It includes outrageous dares, hysterical dips into their pasts, and even a visit from Satan. Simply put, if you love Blink 182, this CD is a must-have. You will laugh, sing along, and when it comes to "Adam's Song" maybe even cry on the wild trip with the guys of Blink. So get this CD. It's worth the money, and you'll love it guaranteed.

Free Music Review: Is it possible to improve upon this?
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes... but not by much. This is, by far, the best Blink 182 CD there is. These guys sound even better live. Not only that, but they play around with the songs, adding in a few words or tweaking the lyrics a little. This concert concists of 18 musical tracks, 2 songs Tom made up, and 29 tracks of some of the funniest jokes you'll ever hear.

After just about every song Tom and Mark talk with each other, making jokes or just random chat which often includes insults directed at each other. I had Enema of the State (and then I lost it). One of the great things of this CD is that it provides you with improved versions of many of the songs of that CD, as well as a few others from Dude Ranch and such.

So it's very funny, different, and played very well. That would be a good way to sum it up, but I want to say a few more things.

First of, my personal favorite song on this CD, "Dammit," is so much better with Travis as the drummer. Travis is one of the most skilled drummers I've heard of in my entire life. Some songs sound so much better fast paced, 'Dammit' is one of them.

Be sure that if your parents mind dirty things, they don't hear you hearing this CD. It has guest appearences by Satan and lovely dirty conversations and jokes that make your face go o.O; before you die laughing.

So if you're a fan of Blink 182, you must get this CD (and "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket"), it's a great value and is so well edited so that you feel like you're right there, BUY IT.
