Free Music Notes for Misery Is a ButterflyFree Music Review: minor keys and splendid butterflies Hit: 5 Stars
According to an interview with BR in a recent issue of Magnet, some critics and fans deplored the loss of "noisy guitars" on this new album. Needless to say, this alludes to tiresome refrains like "selling out." Why are some people opposed to change, and creative change more specifically is beyond my comprehension. To me, Butterfly is not so much a rupture with the past, but a somehow organic development, the continuation of an exploration started on Lemons with the cover of Serge Gainsbourg's Slogan. Butterfly also bares the unmistakable BR signature: beautiful and lingering vocal arrangements, the minor melancholic keys, the complex melodic trajectories. It transports me back in time, to the sophisticated Euro-pop of the seventies, namely that of Ennio Moricone (here the Italian heritage is important :) ) and again Serge Gainsburg. I introduced a number of friends to this album (yes, in this order) and they are already ordering from the back catalogue... Butterfly is a great companion to any situation of life. Listen to it, you'll understand what I mean...PS: They are playing the SIREN FESTIVAL in NYC in July for FREE!!
Free Music Review: a butterfly indeed Hit: 5 Stars
This album is easily without a hint of a question my favorite album to come out this year. True: I have been really miserable for most of this year. And thus more inclined to truly appreciate such a bittersweet album. And true: I haven't invested in many albums this year so its not such a wide scale I'm basing my judgement on. But neither of these things really matter because this album is true musical beauty if I've ever heard it (and I have). The lyricism is astounding. The music is so majestic and full of so many little brilliant intricacies yet simplistic. It really purely tells a story of melancolic wonder. And I love it to pieces.
I guess this is Blonde Redhead's first album on 4AD and they have some big time producer hooking them up with some cinematic magic moodiness and it really works. Its a little bit of a change for BR but really done right. They're like polished diamonds on this album or something.
This album is just really great, lovely, beautiful, sad... and I don't know how I would have gotten through this emotional hellride of a year without it.
Free Music Review: One of the best for 2004. Hit: 5 Stars
Blonde Redhead could just be one of those for composing melancholic and eccentric melodies. Above anything, this is the band's bait to lure listeners into their indie underground. The way they evade the recycled and banal sound of the guitar/drum/and vocal set through `Misery is a Butterfly' gives the album a desired meal, complete with desert and desirable aftertastes. Makino and Amedeo's vocals, though a bit queer fit and compromises with the originality with their music.
This album isn't quite a step forward from `Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons' anymore than Radiohead's `Kid A' was a step forward from `OK Computer.' It's just a step away, which isn't a bad thing. Rather, it's a creative move. The group simply took their music in an ostensive direction. It seems the two albums weren't meant to be cohesive, but allows each individual album to shine. Misery certainly gleams despite its pseudonym.
Free Music Review: Seductively Haunting Hit: 5 Stars
This is a lovely album that eases into the internal soul effortlessly. The mixing is perfect and the strings provide a poetic background. I saw them last nite at the Black Cat in DC - one of my favorite shows in recent times. Kazu and Amando make love on stage with their stares, motions towards one another, and chilling words. This band just keeps getting better, which is so rewarding in this era of mediocrity. Each album is a progression into different soundscapes and emotions. While their sounding like Sonic Youth never bothered me, I'm glad to hear them fully step out of the shadow. This is not Sonic Youth or like anything else out there. Its distinct, dreamy, and daring.
Free Music Review: Took a little getting use to. Hit: 5 Stars
Blonde Redhead has been a band that I have been listening to on and off for about 5 years. When `Misery is a Butterfly' came out I bought it immediately, but I couldn't really get into it. Then I had the opportunity to see them in Rome, and I was totally blown away. It has been a long time since I have seen a really great concert, and the show was a "breath of fresh air". Afterwards I have not been able to stop listening to this album; it was like I, all of a sudden understood the recording. The bottom line is that Blonde Redhead is a great band; their ideas are original and melodic, and this album is up to par with about anything being put out right now.
