Free Music Review: Almost Forgotten But Worth Re-Releasing

The third album by the Texas band "Bloodrock" is a unique, yet now overlooked creation that was originally released (on vinyl) in the early 1970s, later reissued on CD in the 1990s, and then somehow went out of print early in the 21st century. Those fans of this group who once had this album on LP, 8-track, or cassette, and who now want to replace it with a CD are going to have a difficult time finding a new, or even a used copy. The record company should release "Bloodrock 3" again, perhaps in enhanced form, on CD or digital MP form for longstanding fans who need to replace their worn copy, as well as to make it available to potential future fans who can have the opportunity to be introduced to this interesting piece of musical art.
This album starts out with a mid-tempo rocker, "Jessica", in which the guy sings about his girlfriend. This track starts out with the strumming of a bass guitar, which is joined by the organ, and then Jim Rutledge's distinct voice. The next track, "Whisky Vengeance", is somewhat lower in volume, and features the organ as a background to the haunting lyrics about the gripping pain of alcohol abuse. In the third track, "Song For A Brother", the acoustic piano serves as an opener to a moderately slow song about treating people kindly and living peacefully among others. Once again, the organ is heavily portrayed in this socially concientious song. The tempo steps up in the following song "You Gotta Roll", about rolling with life's punches. This piece is characterized by a western swing rhythm, and could almost be a southern rock party song.
The fifth song, "Breach of Lease" is the longest track on this album, at slightly over nine minutes. Here, organ antics and a bass guitar serve as a background to lyrics about the consequences of mistreating the environment in which we live. This song would be just as relevant today as it was back in 1971, perhaps even more so, in light of the contemporary issues of pollution and global warming. "Cool-Aid Kids" follows, with a fast guitar strumming to rapid vocals about people taking advantage of unsuspecting youth. "A Certain Kind" is a beautiful love ballad, in which the organ sound is prominent. Finally, this album ends with "America America", a very short acoustic song with a folk guitar, in contrast to the electric guitar and organ of all preceding tracks.
Bloodrock never really produced another notable album after this one. It would have been interesting to see what additional records they might have created, given their past history of the first three albums. Unfortunately, they somehow faded into oblivion in the atmosphere of the countless new bands which appeared on the horizon in the early 1970s. Yet, many of these new bands would never attain the creativity of Bloodrock, an underappreciated musical group of that time.
