Free Music Review: Groovy, cruisy jazzy vibes from a pure voice

My Mum and my step-Dad went to see Blossom Dearie perform when she was passing through Sydney several (probably over 20) years ago. Of course, us kids (witty teenagers that we were) mocked them for being into Blossom "Dreary"...
Years later, I am proud to report I grew up and this marvellous CD made its way into my collection. I cannot rave highly enough about it!
Blossom's mellow voice is unique and lovely. The cruisy, groovy tunes and jazzy vibe on this album make it the perfect background to a nice dinner party, or when you have friends of a certain age visiting and don't wanna creep them out or blast them with your standard selection of trip hop or up-beat house music, or hip hop or nu metal (some of my favourite kinds of music for entertaining - okay, maybe I save the Linkin Park for the car...)
So, while I don't adore *every* song on this album (I think I usually skip Johnny One Note and tend to have gotten a bit fed-up by Blossom's Blues - basically both the last tracks), I highly recommend it.
Faves are the opening track Deed I do, Comment allez vous and Tout Doucement. Her French pronounciation is so charming!

That's her real name and this is her real voice, as fresh and sweet as the darling buds of May--but never cloying or precious. Fittingly, there's a bright, springtime theme running through this record, which includes "It Might as Well Be Spring," "A Fine Spring Morning," and the CD bonus track "They Say It's Spring." And since Ms. Dearie had recently returned from a few years in France in 1956 when she recorded this, her first U.S. album, there are also some chansons in zee language of love: "Comment Allez Vous," "Tout Doucement," and the aforementioned "It Might As Well Be Printemps." The only thing missing is "April in Paris." Dearie accompanies herself on piano, with Ray Brown (bass) and Jo Jones (drums)--and on some tracks a six-voice chorus. If Chet Baker and Betty Boop had a baby, she'd be Blossom Dearie--and this first-rate album catches her in the springtime of her career. --Jim EmersonJazz Music CDs
