I had know idea who Blossom Dearie is before I tried listening to her on a CD shop. She is not the typical jazz singer on account of her small voice (so with Ms. Holiday)compared to the powerful timbre of most black chanteuses. I was surprised that I had an immediate liking on her style just after one song. And for someone that I just heard for the first time, I thought I would settle for "The Best of..." album for a start. I wasn't wrong.
Nobody so far that I know of has recorded "Rhode Island Is Famous For You" but that song will always be hers to me. Her versions of "The Party's Over", "They Say It's Spring", Manhattan", "Give Him The Ooh-La-la" is definitely Deariesque! She's got a voice that's uniquely sensual. Like Dinah Washington, she has a distinctive vocal style that is instantly recognizable.
