Free Music Notes for AudioFree Music Review: The better of the two BMG DVD-A, but with a bit of a trick! Hit: 5 StarsI bought The Complex on DVD-A after it was recommended to me by several people. It is good and has some great tracks on it but it wasn't the Blue Man Group sound I had found myself loving. It was too rock-ish and almost too conventional.
Enter the aptly named "Audio." This is a good example of why BMG became so big, it's got all their creative efforts in creating new instruments and sounds bottled up on one dual sided disc without all the extra people singing on top of it.
The sound is dynamic, bright and fun and it makes great use of the full 5.1 channels provided to it. Bass is punchy and reasonably well defined and detail through the higher frequencies holds pretty well. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, you realize this isn't just a DTS/DD deal, this thing has DVD-A! So flip that thing over and put it in right side up (or upside down as I will explain) and enjoy even tighter, more defined bass with better detail and separation across the instruments. The subtle benefits of DVD-A are made use of on this disc, and you can hear why DVD-A is better if your equipment is halfway decent (sorry Bose guys).
Now that bit about being upside down and the wrong side up. This disc is labelled but if you don't look closely you just might miss it. If you want to watch the video part, which is the side containing the DTS and DD tracks you need to place it in your player with the little label saying DVD-Video facing down. If you want to experience the joy of DVD-A you have to place it in with the DVD-Audio label facing down.
Unless I'm mistaken this is the exact opposite of every other disc I have and probably most discs on the market. It's a small nuisance, made worse by the fact that the lettering telling you which side is which is small and in an awful choice of color. It does not stand out well against the white band near the center of the disc. Don't miss it though, it's worth putting this disc in wrong side up!
Free Music Review: DVD audio version much better than the CD audio version Hit: 4 StarsI've enjoyed every digital media release from the BMG, but after reading the glowing reviews of the DVD audio versions of the BMG releases ('Audio' and 'The Complex'), I decided to "re-purchase" 'Audio' on DVD Audio. (The following comments might be construed as hyperbole, but trust me...I'm not exaggerating -or- a "BMG reviewer plant".) If you have the 'Audio' CD and like it, buy the 'Audio' DVD audio version and you'll be even more in love. If you listened to 'Audio' and were lukewarm about it, try the DVD audio version, as it has a much different feel to it in DTS/Dolby 5.1. In the latter, you can hear a whole lot more in the mix...it makes the diverse sound of the BMG come out in a big way.
I will definitely be re-purchasing 'The Complex' on DVD-A after this purchase. Your mileage may vary, but I though I'd let you know what one man-on-the-street thought about this release.
Happy listening!
Free Music Review: Great Product Hit: 5 StarsAs DVD Audio is an excellent product. It simply fills all the sounds of my DVD Audio player.
Free Music Review: Outperforms the CD version by far Hit: 5 StarsI have owned Audio on CD for some time and just purchased it in DVD Audio. The new level of quality is amazing, instruments that hid themselves among the clamour of the tracks are now as clear as bells ringing. If you wish to hear Audio the way it was ment to sound, do yourself a favor and pick it up on DVD Audio.(If you have a DVD Audio player, that is.)
Free Music Review: Totally worth it!!! Hit: 5 StarsThis is a great CD. Awesome music...I listen to it everyday!!! The show is soooooo worth the money to go see. The Blue Man Group is awesome. GO SEE THE SHOW!!!
