Free Music Review: A must have for any 5.1 owner!

I have had the DVD-A version of Blue Man Group's Audio for a while now, but after few months of traveling I am back in my home theater loving every second like it was my first time there. One disc that has truely stood out is this masterpiece of a DVD. I can see that there are close to two hundred reviews on both CD/DVD releases already, but i can't let my feelings go unsaid, hopefully in a different form than previous reviews.
I had seen the reviews that people review a cd track by track, and I like the idea. I listened to the DVD at the loudest volume possible while maintaining comfort, and with pen and paper in hand jotted down anything that came into mind. Here is the overview of my notes:
1) Mandelgroove - Good buildup, then they unleash the Tubulum. Of course, as everyone knows, you can't play a tubulum without a big loud drum. So the Blue Men introduce the large drums that test all the hard work spend tweaking your theater setup. This happens to be one of the best songs to truely see what 5.1 is all about. Sounds travel around the room in a way I have never heard. It all ends with an absolutely amazing ending.
2) PVC IV - Starts out with, who would have guessed, the Blue Men Group's version of PVC pipes. The PVC lasts a while making the impatient bust with anticipation, and the relaxed are simply caressed with a good rythem. The anticipation leads to a great workout for your surround speakers as a chain of drums starts playing right behind you. Then the Tempo kicks up a notch only to slam you with the wall of sound effect from the big drums.
3) TV Song - Good western style beginning to lead to a nice buildup of energy. Of course the buildup of energy announces the arrival of the big drums and will leave that pile of money you call a subwoofer crying. I personally enjoy the air poles they use, it adds a nice background throughout the song, and works your front channel speakers.
4) Synaesthetic - Great mixture of drums accompanied by a full mixture of sound that satisfys any taste. It has an almost Aboriginal sound that gives it that tribal edge. Of course I can't forget the deep bass throughout the song, nor the simple yet effective use of the guitar.
5) Utne Live Wire - Simple beginning of low rumbly bass and a soft guitar playing. Then the big drums are added once again to rattle you to your bones. The sword air poles are awe inspiring in this 5.1 mix as it really sounds like the artists are running around the room.
6) Rods and Cones - Even at the very beginning of the song, you just know that something amazing is about to come. The beats that follow are incredible. Definately the most upbeat song so far on the list. The addition and subtraction of sounds from this particular track truely show the precision used in the making of the DVD.
7) Tension 2 - It has a sound that is similar to something you would hear in the metal genre. Somewhat anticlimatic in the sense that its so short and nothing really to the song. Good sound though.
8) Opening Mandelbrot - Keeps the energy of the previous song, and a surprisingly familiar sound. The mesh of instruments used truely complement each other into a full adrenaline filled ride.
9) Club Nowhere - Another bass test of a song, it starts off with PVC and a slow paced drum beat to match. This particular song showed me just what I hadn't fully woofer-proofed. A quite relaxing song despite the bone rattling bass.
10) Drumbone - This song has a great variety to it, and manages to pull off addition of new sounds a number of times. After a certain point a barrage of mid and high frequency music pumps you up only for the song to fill the spectrum of sound and create a truely synaesthetic experience.
11) Shadows - Good rythem, but short. Nothing else really to it.
12) Cat Video - Another song showing the power of 5.1, excellent movement of sound around the room. Not a whole lot happens throughout the song really. Does include a somewhat humorous video on cats for those that actually have the tv on while listening to DVD-A.
13) Klein Mandelbrot - Same big loud drum, pretty much the same rythem. Then again, who really get tired of it? The beginning leaves a little to be desired, but the second half more than makes up for any short fall. Truely nothing short of amazing.
14) Endless column - Absolutely incredible way to end the DVD. The transitions of sound, and more bass than you may be able to handle. Yeah thats right, I just challenged you. Breathtaking track!
(Bonus Track) Last Train to Transcentral - Some explanation might be needed here. I'm not a huge dancer, but I enjoy the occasional club outing. So it goes without saying I have been to some really pathetic clubs, but it must be said that I have also been to some amazing ones. The sound of this song reminds me of something you would only hear at the best techno clubs. It really is a truely astounding mix, and it'll give you a taste of Heaven (Pun intended for those in London).
