...that leave you feeling so stoned." This record is a high water achievement not only for Canadian alternative-country rockers, Blue Rodeo, but it also qualifies as being one of the best alt.country records of the 1990's. Co-songwriters Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor composed ten stunningly original and wildly romantic songs that speak of life's and love's mysteries and they brilliantly evoke the landscapes of their native Canada as metaphors that add context to those mysteries of human emotion. From out in the middle of Lake Ontario, from a restaurant `round the bend', to the shores of Pyramid Lake, to the waves on English Bay, and to the dance of the Northern Lights; natural settings, as well as the rain and the sun, all serve to ground the listener on a lyrical journey through the complexities of life's circumstances and events that defy rational understanding. Familiar situations such as losing love, feeling alienation, being hoodwinked and robbed, imagining seeing space ships on a camp out, and the joys of finding love, weave seamlessly through this song cycle. That seven of the 11 songs on "Five Days in July" form the core of Blue Rodeo's live in concert repertoire is testament to how powerful these songs connect with anyone who's ever romanced to, danced to and reflected upon them.
The musicianship is fully accomplished from Greg Keelor's blistering guitar solos and rough hewn vocals, to Jim Cuddy's beautiful and heart wrenching singing, to Kim Deschamps's delightful pedal steel and slide guitar fills, to James Gray's accordion flourishes, and to Bazil Donovan's subtle bass and Glenn Milchem's understated yet steady drumming. This record is a tight ensemble effort with special guest appearances from Sarah McLachlan (piano and vocals), and Colin Linden (guitar). On this one record, Blue Rodeo took alternative country rock to a new level and dimension imprinted by their uniquely Canadian style. Toronto-based Blue Rodeo was purveying its own alternately sunny, grizzled mix of country and rock before the alternative country boomlet made it fashionable, achieving stardom north of the border but nary a blink of recognition in the U.S. This self-produced 1993 album, recorded mostly live at the band's farm and released the following year in the U.S., brought them belated stateside fans partly because of the alternative country trend, partly because the set was more lyrical and explicit in its country accents. As transparent, and unapologetic, Neil Young fans, this was Blue Rodeo's Harvest, distinguished by the poles of its songwriting and singing team, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Cuddy's clear, soaring tenor provides a romantic foil for Keelor's smokier, rougher-edged vocals, and together they write brooding rock ballads ("5 Days in May"), ringing, deceptively uptempo loser's anthems ("Hasn't Hit Me Yet"), and convincing country ballads ("Bad Timing"), as well as spacier rock dirges ("What Is This Love," featuring Sarah McLachlan). --Sam SutherlandCountry Music CDs
