Free Music Review: The Master at his most moving and majestic
Hit: 5 Stars

I have a formidable collection of albums by Bob Dylan, and, still, after all these years I can't find one that is not deserving of five stars. However, 5 stars does translate to between 80 and 100%; to be fair, not all 5-star albums are perfect in all respects. But here, with Live at Budokan, we are definitely in the stratosphere of 95-100%. The 95% goes for disc 1, which I take to be a kind of warm-up to disc 2 in which Bob Dylan reaches his new-found full stride.Disc 2 is perfect. Dylan's music is hardly happy, so can you imagine how beautiful it has to be to carry all that sadness and still please a crowd? The beauty of this disc is the re-working of songs already somewhat taken for granted into the intense hymns that they were always meant to be. The soul/gospel sounding backup choir, organ, violin and various wind instruments blend together perfectly, rising to such exquisitely crafted spiritual heights that they end up ecstatic epiphanies. After an intense listening, this album leaves me debilitated (like after listening to Jimi Hendrix's 'Machin Gun'), and to quote ISB "rejoicing in my warm, salt tears, holding to my heart the beauty of a sad song".The purest art surely takes you to where the artist found it, and in this, Dylan succeeded entirely on this album.

Don't be put off by so-called officianados who berate this album. Dave Marsh, In the 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide, regarded it as so poor that it should never have been recorded. Somehow, critics and fans of Dylan have always wanted to keep him in boxes at various stages of his career. First they tried to prevent him from going electric, and later, as with Budokan, they took umbrage when he decided to radically re-interpret his own songs. The audience at Budokan certainly weren't so conservative; their intense applause and encores clearly indicate the contrary - they were completely taken in by this (again) all-new Dylan sound delivered by a Bob who was most definitely in his prime here. Bob Dylan's own contentment with this rendition of his beautiful songs is touchingly recorded in the liner notes. While the intensity of conservative Dylan fans and their admiration are touching, genius cannot be stifled. One should rather let it take you to places you would never have dreamt of,as Dylan has done so admirably at Budokan. Bravo, Maestro Bob!

At Budokan [Live In Japan, February, 1978] Poster

It was Dylan himself who said "the present now will later be past" and there's no better proof of it than this bizarre live collection of his old hits performed in big band versions where nothing seems to mean what it originally did. There's something going on here and even Dylan doesn't know what it is. Following the success of Cheap Trick and Neil Diamond--who both scored with Japanese live albums--Dylan took his Las Vegas revue with him and handed up "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Shelter from the Storm," and even "The Times They Are A-Changin'" without the vehemence that made them anthems for a past generation. Weird. --Rob O'Connor
