Free Music Notes for Biograph

Free Music Review: Don't Bother
Hit: 3 Stars

It goes without saying that this is great music, but it's not worth buying and I wish someone had told me that before I blew 30 bucks on it. Naive little me figured I better find out what all this Bob Dylan nonsense was, greatest songwriter ever and whatnot, so I pick up this three disc set figuring that should cover me. But no. I reccomend using that thirty bucks to buy Hwy. 61, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. It's a much better use of your money. The fact is after hearing Biograph what you are going to do is go out and buy everything from Freewheelin' through Desire tossing on Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft, while you're at it. This will then be obsolete for you, as it is for me. I guess it's a good introduction, but it's a damn expensive introduction. If you really want to get your feet wet before buying the complete works I guess you can buy greatest hits volume one, which is by no means complete, but at least is only nine or ten bucks. After you hear that you'll run out and buy all the studio albums, so in all honesty I reccomend buying Highway 61 or Blood on the Tracks as an intro because then you'll at least have a start on your collection when you begin, which I promise you, you will. Blonde on Blonde might be a bit tough to start with, it's a good idea to go with one of the other two to get used to Dylan and his way of making music before diving into the greatest double album ever. So, that's about all. Enjoy it, whatever you choose to start with.

Free Music Review: Fills a tiny niche, no more
Hit: 5 Stars

of course, most of these songs are immortal, but that goes without saying.

this 3 cd set fills a tiny niche: those who know bob is a brilliant artist (and are thus willing to spend money) but have never owned a single cd or record.

Free Music Review: Great Collection!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've owned this set since it was realeased and the discs still get play. Great collection of Dylan classics and a few remakes and out-takes. My favorite disc is #3. Up To Me is the best Dylan cut that never made an album. On disc #2 the alternate version of You're A Big Girl Now is excellent. All in all a great mix. BUY IT!

Free Music Review: A must-have for all fans.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic box set that every true Dylan fan should own. It covers the period from 1961 to 1981, and has 53 digitally remastered songs, including a whopping 21 rare and unreleased recordings. The 36 page booklet contains rare photographs and an in-depth, informative, exclusive interview. Also includes 5 separate pages, on which each song is given at least a paragraph, often more, of interesting information about it.

Listening to this set, it is so hard to understand why the unreleased songs, were previously unreleased. They really are just as good, in some cases better, than some songs that were released. But never mind...we get them all here, thankfully. This set is a treasure trove of musical gems. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Great intro to Dylan..
Hit: 5 Stars

I had the pleasure of seeing Bob Dylan in concert last year, and while I wasn't familar with the songs he played, I was very impressed.

That being said I decided I wanted to have some Dylan to listen to at home. I thought about getting the three Greatest Hits album, but decided to go with this box set instead. It's been a great listening experience.

Of course you'll get the well know songs, "Lay Lady Lay", The Times They Are A-Changin'", Blowin' in the Wind", "Subterranean Homesick Blues", "Mr. Tamborine Man", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", among others.

The true gems are the unreleased and B-sides. Not sure why they've been left off the albums, but they're genuine Bob Dylan. Great music and great lyrics are his trademarks and this box set holds true to that premise.

A large (almost the size of the box) booklet comes with the set. It features plenty of color pictures and backgroud information. There are also yellow pages with detailed notes (and Dylan quotes) about every song on the album. A nice touch.

A great sampler for the casual fan. Enjoy.
