Free Music Review: Still the best introduction to the young Bob Dylan

You get several sides of Bob Dylan in these ten tracks. First up is the unusual, playful, mildly controversial Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. From here you are quickly introduced to Bob Dylan the protest singer. Blowin' in the Wind is one of the truly seminal songs of the 1960s, capturing the spirit of that hectic decade as effectively as any song possibly could. The Times They Are A-Changin' is another incredibly important protest song from that era. Until I became a Dylan fan, I thought that It Ain't Me Babe was a Johnny Cash song and that Mr. Tambourine Man was a Byrds song. Once I heard Dylan sing both tracks, though, there could be no doubt that these two songs belonged completely to him. Like A Rolling Stone is simply incredible; its unrelenting tempo pushes Dylan to heights of great passion, and the social commentary inherent in the lyrics gives the song real meaning and importance. Speaking of tempo, Subterranean Homesick Blues showcases a frenetic pace filled with some the wittiest lyrics Dylan has ever written. After these two songs, one almost needs a moment to stop and catch his breath, and the last three tracks oblige the listener by changing the pace quite considerably. I Want You and Just Like A Woman are love songs of a sort and serve to round out quite nicely the amazingly different musical stylings showcased on this Greatest Hits collection. The real gem on this CD, though, is Positively Fourth Street; not only is it a wonderful song, it was not available elsewhere at the time of this album's initial release in 1967.

Bob Dylan is an immensely complex, talented musician; as a young singer/songwriter in the 1960s, he became a cultural icon whose reflection of and impact on the turbulent society in America at that time is immense and revealing. No CD can truly capture the magic of Bob Dylan's early career, but this Greatest Hits album makes an admirable attempt to do so. If you are curious about Bob Dylan and unfamiliar with his music, this is the CD I would recommend you listen to.
