Free Music Notes for Dylan (3CD) (Deluxe Edition)Free Music Review: Fantastic Hit: 5 StarsOne word FANTASTIC!
This album covers so much. It does not cover everything but it gives you the best of the best. I love how in the booklet it gives you the album that the track originally appeared on. That way you can fill in the gaps in your collection or focus on a particular period of Dylan's career. Sound is perfect the presentation is spot on. It is a better compilation than the "Essential..." series that all the major names have out. I highly recommend it.
Free Music Review: A solid introduction to the work of Dylan, but lacking in depth. Hit: 3 StarsOther reviewers who have described this collection as a good introductory collection are correct. Bob Dylan fans won't purchase this; this is for the young musician who understands Dylan's profound impact on American music, and wants to get his feet wet; it is for the older folks who avoided Dylan's music for the last forty years because it was associated with all things 'rock 'n' roll'; it is for the person who wants a handful of Dylan's most well-known songs in an easy-to-access form.
Having said that, it's not a bad collection; the value of the songs here is self-evident. But it's a shame that nobody has yet endeavored to put together a collection of Dylan's lesser-known (and arguably better) songs for those who already have a cursory acquaintance with his music, and want something deeper. If you're new to Dylan, this isn't a bad place to start, but for the sake of understanding his artistic magnanimity, please don't let this be as far as you go in exploring his legacy!
Free Music Review: If you want a Starter Kit - This is the one Hit: 4 StarsYes there is nothing new in this set for the fan who already owns everything to do with Dylan. However this is a fantastic set for those fans wanting a really decent Dylan collection.
I dont know why but there seems to be something special about listening to this set in order through the 3 disks. The song order just flows really well. I actually love it.
I do have all the Dylan releases so this offerred nothing new to me either but its on high rotation in my MP3 player now.
Highly recommended as a starter kit for the person who wants a great taste of all things Dylan musically.
Free Music Review: DYLAN Hit: 5 StarsBeautiful package With a nice eclectic presentation of a man's life. The second CD is my favorite tho' I really enjoyed Brownsville Girl on the 3rd. The first CD Has Masters of War a song that was relavent when penned and oh so relivent once again. The tone and quality are excellent. What else can one say but Dylan as a background for my generation this is a perfect sample of class. Enjoy all you new and old fans. thanks from michele talsma
Free Music Review: Good but not great ! Hit: 4 StarsI'm an old Dylan fan and I own all his albums.
Bob is the best and of course the music of this compilation is good and the choice of tracks is correct. But I won't give this box 5 stars because of his concept.
The choice made is to have all the obvious tracks in chronological order.
I understand that. But still I would have prefered some more risks : what about Farewell Angelina ; Senor ; Desolation Row ; Idiot Wind ; When The Ship Comes In ; Tears Of Rage ; I and I ; Shot Of Love ; Angelina ; I Pity The Poor Immigrant ; Dear Landlord ; Percy's Song ? . I would have also liked the inclusion of some great live performances : Visions Of Johanna 66 ; It's all over now baby blue 66 ; One too many morning 76.
And I would have chosen a non chronoligical tracking order : think of The Greatest hits Vol 1, 2 and 3 or Biograph, they work !
The I'm not there soundtrack demonstrates well that another kind of compilation would have been better !
