Free Music Review: Raw, Raging Rock and Roll At Its Finest.

Bob Dylan's 1975-76 tour with his Rolling Thunder Revue stands as one of the more storied moments in his post 1960s' career. The 10 song "Hard Rain" is a pretty good representation as to why that is so: never had Dylan had such a fire in his belly when performing live. The songs on "Real Live" aren't polished or pretty, but they rock like noboby's business and are lively enough to wake the dead.
As Dylan so often does, several of his classic songs have been rearranged to fit the hard rocking sound of the Rolling Thunder Revue, which included such figures as Ramblin' Jack Elliot, T. Bone Burnett, Joan Baez and Roger McGuinn. The opening "Maggie's Farm" moves along like a jack hammer, and the harder edged take of "One Too Many Mornings" that follows gives this melancholy ballad a harder edge without removing any of its emotional edge. "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" jitters along merily with a great instrumental break, while "Oh Sister" sways with a steady majesty.
"Lay Lady Lay" is the one true misfire, a clumsy, aimless slaughtering of one of his most tender love songs whose new lyrics sound like they're just spewing out of the singers' mouths on the spot. It's by far the worst re-imagining Dylan has ever done of one of his best songs. "Shelter from the Storm," however, is sublime: tight and passionate, raw but melodic, with Dylan pouring his soul into the words the way it's mean to be. "You're a Big Girl Now" is pretty and powerful, with Bob singing with more vulnerability than intensity as opposed to elsewhere on the record. "I Threw It All Away" is given a grand, over the top rendition that sets up perfectly for the finale: "Idiot Wind."
The studio take was passionate but subdued, this live version is in your face and pulls no punches. The venom stings the listener like a flame. It may be the single greatest live performace Dylan has ever done. The band sputters about disjointedly in the best way possible. The result is a terrfiying emotional torrent.
"Hard Rain" is a truly thunderous snapshot in an intriguing period of Dylan's career.
