Free Music Notes for Nashville Skyline

Free Music Review: A Pure Joy to Listen to
Hit: 5 Stars

I love the guitar work on this record, especially on "Nashville Skyline Rag" and "Country Pie." I love the country flavor, but then I've always been a fan of country music. I'm a huge Dolly Parton fan and I like George Jones too. So, liking Bob Dylan as much as I do and since my husband has him playing in our house an awful lot, this tends to be one of my favorites of his. True there are no protest songs here, not hard driving rock, no secret messages, no songs that you can interrupt in a number of ways. This is a very straightforward record with very straightforward music that is just a pure joy to listen to.

Free Music Review: What a Shocker
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, what a shocker this record must have been when it came out. The opening song, a reworking of the lovely "Girl from the North Country" is nothing like the original. Sung as a duet with Johnny Cash, this song, like the rest of the record, is pure out and out country. Country all the way. But that's not necessarily bad. Dylan is great when he does folk, he is great when he does rock and he is great when he does country. I really love the instrumental "Nashville Skyline Rag," which kind of reminds me a bit of "The Cough Song," from Bootleg fame. I play this record an awful lot, usually right after I play JWH, in fact I have those two records on the same playlist on my iPod along with "New Morning." These records, for me at least, are very uplifting. I know back then, maybe a lot of Dylan's fans didn't think so, but I bet they all appreciate them now. I know I sure do.

Free Music Review: Friendly album for non-Dylan fans
Hit: 5 Stars

...and I mean friendly in the sense that Robert Zimmerman loses the affected nasal voice and gives people something pleasant to hear... it's a much improved voice... great music... highly recommended (Cash helped Dylan a lot also!!)

Free Music Review: Is it rolling, Bob?
Hit: 4 Stars

This album by Bob Dylan was recorded in Nashville in 1969. It has a country-rock feel to it, partly because the musicians playing on it are top Nashville session musicians. It is also an atypically short Dylan album (27 minutes), with none of the longer songs that are often featured on his albums. This was during the brief period that Dylan quit smoking, and his voice lost a lot of it's roughness. The songs here are mostly of the quiet, romantic type. Highlights include the hit "Lay Lady Lay" and a remake of "Girl From the North Country" with Johnny Cash. This is usually not considered to be one of Dylan's best albums, but it can still be considered a minor classic.

Free Music Review: Different Dylan
Hit: 4 Stars

Bob Dylan has a very recognizable, nasally whine of a voice which pretty much makes him the singer he is. The strange thing about this CD is his voice is different. Hardly recognizable in fact, this is also one of his most different albums. This album is a lot more country-ish (Johnny Cash is featured on the first song). But it's still good despite it's 27 minute long running time. Tracks:
1. Girl from the North Country-4/5-Featuring Johnny Cash. Dylan's vocals (to me) were hardly recognizable; Cash is great.
2. Nashville Skyline Rag-4/5-A country-ish instrumental.
3. To Be Alone With You-4/5-Really short; But a good song.
4. I Threw It All Away-4/5-Very short; but the lyrics are good.
5. Peggy Day-3/5-Don't like this song that much. Exactly two minutes long.
6. Lay Lady Lay-4/5-This song's pretty good.
7. One More Night-5/5-The best song on the album so far.
8. Tell Me That It Isn't True-4/5-A typical-Dylan story within a song deal. It's OK.
9. Country Pie-5/5-The best song on the album period. It's not even two minutes, but it's catchy.
10. Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You-4/5-(No Comment)
