Free Music Review: Excellent "family man" record
Hit: 4 Stars

This is one of Dylan's more underrated albums. There is a real warmth to the music here and to Dylan's voice. Dylan was reportedly at his most content as a family man at the time he recorded New Morning and it reflects in the mood of the music. It's the kind of record you'd put on if you were in some backwoods cabin with the wife and kids for the weekend - it inspires you to seek out nature, breathe clean air and be a loving person. Sort of reminds you of the important things in life. That the grass is green enough where you're already standing.

Three songs in particular - Sign On The Window, The Man In Me and Day of the Locusts - rank, in my opinion, as being as special as anything he produced in the '70s. They are worth the price of this cd alone. On the gospel-like end of Sign On The Window, try not to be moved when he sings:

Build me a cabin in Utah,
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout,
Have a bunch of kids who call me "Pa,"
That must be what it's all about,
That must be what it's all about.

Those few lines, to me, really sum up Dylan at that point in his life. And because the sentiments expressed are so real, so heartfelt, they resonate with you, too.

The only bad song is If Dogs Run Free, where Dylan - rather badly - attempts jazz. It kind of messes up the flow of the album at a crucial point. I also prefer the bootleg version (with George Harrison) of If Not For You, but that's by-the-by.

The sound quality of this cd is pretty good. Hopefully it will be remastered soon but, if you have been holding off because you are afraid of what the sound will be like, don't worry, it's not an issue at all.

Overall, New Morning is certainly worth getting - serious and casual Dylan fans alike.

Free Music Review: A wonderful, if lightweight record
Hit: 4 Stars

I love this album. Sure, it doesn't compare to what came before it but it's still incredibly enjoyable. It's comparable to Nashville Skyline, but with less of a country sound. The piano is the dominant instrument on this album. There's still a country influence though, with pedal steel guitar here and there.

Highlights:

If Not For You is a nice love song written for Dylan's wife Sara, which was covered by George Harrison on his All Things Must Pass album. This is probably the most well-known song on the album.

Day of the Locusts, while I have no idea what it's about, stands out in my mind with its piano-based melody. That chorus always sticks in my head, "Yeah the locusts sang such a sweet melody".

The piano-based Winterlude is also one of the more memorable songs for me, if for nothing more than the line "Winterlude, this dude thinks you're fine". The music is interesting too, with a kind of jazzy, lounge sound to it.

If Dogs Run Free I really like a lot. Dylan being a follower of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, it makes sense that he would try his hand at beat poetry. Dylan's spoken-word vocal is accompanied by jazzy guitar, piano and bass as well as some interesting scat-singing. It's no classic, certainly, but I really get a kick out of this track.

Sign On The Window is one of the album's best songs. Another piano-based track, and featuring back-up singers, this song sort of epitomises the sound of the album.

I've liked The Man In Me ever since I first heard it in the Coen Brothers movie, The Big Lebowski. It's quite a unique song in Dylan's canon, I can't think of another one that sounds similar to it. From Dylan's "la-la-la-la-la-la" to that organ part, it's quite a distinctive song. But whenever I hear it, I picture Jeff Bridges flying through the sky.

Father of Night is an excellent album closer. It's a cool poetic track with a nice melody. One of the more memorable album tracks.

To sum up, New Morning is not exactly an essential Bob Dylan album. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to newcomers. But if you're a big fan and you're venturing beyond the bare essentials, it's a nice enjoyable lightweight record that you may want to check out. With quite a bit of variety (country, jazz, poetry, piano ballads), New Morning is a very interesting album with lots to offer Dylan fans.

this is a very good bob dylan album, not great but very good, now remember, a very good bob dylan album is like a great anybody else. first, i will agree with one of the posts that "the man in me" is an awesome song, very underrated, worth buying the cd for. winterlude is not far behind it, it's all just different than his previous stuff, but very good, if you like dylan, you'll like this album, and should have it. interestingly, there is no harmonica and maybe the only time we have heard dylan do la, la, las.

Free Music Review: Like Dylan Himself, This Record is so Hard to Define
Hit: 5 Stars

After JWH and Nashville Skyline (which I like a lot), Dylan came out with Self Portrait. There are a few gems on SP but a lot of it was considered pretty lackluster when it came out. However three decades later and I have to admit, I play it all the way through on occasion and I enjoy it, even that corny version of S & G's "The Boxer". Anyway it appears that Colombia was in a hurry to get something out after SP to buck up what they must have thought was Dylan's sagging career, so they came out with this excellent album.

For me New Morning works in every way possible. I love the music. I love Dylan's voice here. I really like the lyrics and the background singers just seem to add to the whole mix. Yeah, a few records down the road they might seem to get a little Motownish, but here they just add to the overall haunting, spooky, bluesy and maybe even a little jazzy feeling of this record. And you know what, there is even a little C & W here. Like Dylan himself, this record is so hard to define.
