Free Music Review: What A Great Surprise! Very Strong Live Performance

Ok, admittedly my opinion comes from a very wide listening pool. My opinion is NOT bound down by a love for one particular style of Dylan. I believe that an artist, just like Dylan said almost 50 years ago, is dying if he isn't busy being born. Standing in one place is death for an artist, regardless of what the adoring fans might like. So my opinion is coming from a different place than many of those here on Amazon.
So, I own hundreds of CDs - jazz, rock, classical... and several Bob Dylan releases - Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Free Wheelin', Bringing it All Back Home, Desire, Blood on the Tracks, all of the latest stuff from Time Out of Mind onward. I mention this to set context. I purchased Real Live because I wanted a live Bob Dylan document and I picked this one because the inclusion of Ian McLagen and Mick Taylor was really intriguing. More context stuff: I used to write a lot of reviews on Amazon to support my favorite writers, musicians, and film makers. Not so much anymore, I just don't have the time. Now I only write when I think something has been unfairly dismissed and want to encourage a second look. Here's how it all shakes down:
Real Live is REAL LIVE! I love this CD.
Highway 61 Revisited (band): The CD opens with a blistering version of Highway 61 Revisited that's been rearranged with more of a back-beat than the "boogie" beat we hear on the original. Johnny Winter owns this tune now so nothing is going to sound better; however, Bob's changed this up, maybe because of the Winter arrangement, and it's quite good, rockin' stuff.
Maggie's Farm (band): A scorching rendition. Mick Taylor is really showing off his marvelous slide guitar work here. I could listen to this all day long. Bob's singing almost sound like self-parody and, understanding Bob, it may be likely that's exactly what he's doing. After a couple of listens you won't even notice it.
I and I (band): I don't own Infidels (yet) so can't compare to the original. I can tell you that this is done with ferocity and sung with great intensity. Another great selection.
License to Kill (band): Another tune I'd never heard so can't compare. Again, this is done with quite a bit of emotion, it's just a superb performance.
It Ain't Me (solo Bob): One of the high points of the CD. As another reviewer said, who can listen to this an not get chills when the thousands of voices come through singing the chorus the first time through and then applaud themselves. It's another powerful moment
Tangled Up In Blue (solo Bob): I prefer this to the original, 'nuff said. Tangled up in
Masters of War: One of the most intense live performances I have ever heard. Bob Dylan makes you believe he wants to stand on the grave of those who run the military industrial complex of the US and make sure they are DEAD. Incredible.
Ballad of a Thin Man (band): Close to the original Highway 61 arrangement but done with more intensity. Lots of great guitar playing from Mick Taylor on this one.
Girl From the North Country (solo Bob): As perfect a performance as we're going to hear live. Wonderful
Tombstone Blues (band): Back to scorchin' the earth. I thought this one was going to sound really bizarre with Carlos Santana guesting but for once, Carlos puts down the "secret Carlos Santana guitar progression" and plays outside fo the dorian mode. If I had not read his name in the liner notes I would never have guessed this was him. He plays within the context of the tune and it's a great closer.
All in all, I can't understand why anyone would fail to be impressed with this release. I love it and it's getting lots of spins in my CD player and on my mp3 player. Sure, this is a pickup band for the 83 Europen Tour. Guys like Miles Davis used to do that sort of thing all the time. It's about the cost of taking a band overseas. I think Taylor is great with Bob and hope to find additional collaborations with him. Money well spent folks!
