Free Music Review: Shine Your Light -- Same Dylan, but a New Direction

Bob Dylan is a man who jumps in feet first without looking back and that's just what he did with this record. Up till now, he'd been a reader of the Bible, drawing references from it for his songs, but someone tossed a silver cross onto the stage when he was playing in Montreal, he picked it up, kept it and later in Arizona he experienced something, who knows what, it was personal, but it made him believe and this record is the result.

This record, like Blood on the Tracks, is a deeply personal record. During the "Blood" sessions Dylan was going through the pain of separation, during the "Slow Train Sessions" he's a man more sure of himself, secure in his belief. But if you've followed Bob Dylan at all, then you know he's always worn his heart on his sleeve. He delivers a bit of himself with each record. Where he's at is what you get. This is the same Dylan here, he's just going in a new direction, but he's still giving his audience one hundred percent, still putting himself out there.

Christian or not, believer or not, give this record a chance and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The music is pure, the lyrics poetic, Dylan's voice as good as it's ever been. I believe in this record and if you give it a listen, I think you will too.

Free Music Review: SLOW TWISTER COMING

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE PROPHET BOB DYLAN: Sexy and sophisticated music! I listened this CD this Friday evening while occupied on a project of mine so I didn't give this album full attention. It intrigued me very much so the following evening I REALLY listened to it the second time while watching "Twister" on ABC the second time in two weeks & put the TV on mute. It starts off with "Gotta Serve Somebody" that was not new to me, but is a beautifully-done piece of music that won him an award. #2 "Precious Angel" is reminiscent of a long ago Dylan--beautifully executed song w/his typical intonations. If #3 disappoints you somewhat because Bob lacks his usual fullness of voice and has a hard time holding on to a note, please HANG ON VERY TIGHT because you will be totally BLOWN AWAY by #4, #5 & #6 as they are a WHIRLWIND of powerful songs sung with ABSOLUTE MASTERY and in total DYLAN STYLE. The total music mix--vocal, instruments & sound make these songs pieces of great art. These three songs--ESPECIALLY (along with Gotta Serve Somebody)--are superb and superbly sung to perfection. I really want to highlight Bob's AMAZING VOCAL ABILITIES because this album REALLY NEON LIGHTS his unparalleled vocal skills as a singer. He may not have the best sounding voice (I love it) but no one can do what he does with his voice (AND always on key). It took me a while for this realization to REALLY sink in, (I noticed his great singing abilities, but failed to FULLY REALIZE him as a GREAT SINGER BESIDES a composer and poet) but that is the truth. "Man Gave Names to All the Animals" is a children's nursery song, but it is sure one of the coolest nursery songs I ever heard.

There is no reason to be upset by Dylan's religious fervor if that irritates you. (Really!!, he has ALWAYS been known for his lyrical and singing fervor on whatever subject he dedicates himself--THAT'S EXACTLY what makes him so interesting!!!) Some lyrics may seem a little bit strong (but really these lyrics are pretty mild), but don't forget that when he was young and bursting with talent, he was taken advantage of by those who saw in him their profit while others saw in him their prophet. In "Modern Times" he tells of how he was almost worked to death--which means he had his share of bitterness and abuse and wants to let you know. (I happen to agree now and then with some of his observations of these modern times even if I am NOT a bible fan in the least). Bob Dylan is a S U P E R B musician, composer, poet AND an EXCEPTIONAL MASTER SINGER and that is what you should get out of this!! This is top grade music. I listened to this album all Sunday long while still in love with Oh Mercy.

Free Music Review: The Best of Dylan's Gospels

'Slow Train Coming' is the first of Bob Dylan's three CD's of mostly original gospel songs, released in 1979, followed by 'Saved' in 1980 and 'Shot of Love' in 1981. I cannot say this conclusively, since i have yet to listen to the third of this set, I am very inclined to agree with all other reviewers who said this is the best of the three. It is certainly better than 'Saved', although this second of the set is still good. The thing which most strikes me about these 'gospel' albums' is that unlike Dylans metamorphoses into Rock and Country genres, Dylan actually seems to fall back on his musical style of 'Highway 61 Revisited' and 'Blond on Blond', albeit without the twistedly poetic lyrics. All his lyrics are remarkably straightforward, which makes it a lot easier to evaluate these albums. Oddly, there is great power in that obscure poetry, combined with Dylan's heartfelt interpretations. For example, none of the songs on this album have the great power we feel in 'All Along the Watchtower', 'The Times They are A'Changin', and 'Blowin in the Wind'. On the other hand, Dylan does us the great favor of using material from scripture which simply do not appear in your average hymn, or even in those done by the most theologically inclined lyricists, such as Martin Luther.
I am charmed enough by these products of this consumate songwriter that I am even inclined to suggest that the musical director at our church somehow make use of them. Dylan's genius may be shining on unfamiliar material, but it is still genius, nonetheless.

Free Music Review: Established the uneven trend that SHOT OF LOVE takes to the extreme

Of Dylan's three Christian albums, aesthetically this is the best and most consistent, although SAVED is a strong gospel album in its own right.. SHOT OF LOVE, while having some brilliant moments (although, unfortunately, most of the brilliant moments were left OFF that particular album), never really fully gelled to the vision Dylan seemed to want to take it. SHOT OF LOVE filled like it was supposed to be a Christian pop album, merging the best of both art forms into a cohesive whole. When it worked, it really worked ("Every Grain of Sand.") When it didn't, SHOT OF LOVE just sinks.

And what of SLOW TRAIN COMING? Well, like SHOT OF LOVE, only half of this record gels into truly great material. The first four songs on Side 1 start the album really strong. Judging from the momentum these songs have, SLOW TRAIN COMING should have a really strong finish, and would have been one of his best albums. Sadly, Dylan stalls halfway through the album and as a result SLOW TRAIN COMING is greatly weakened. The rest of the album becomes craftsmanship instead of art, though the album does end on a high note with "When He Returns", a classic Gospel song.

That, perhaps, is the best identifier for SLOW TRAIN COMING. Dylan's obviously focused on these tracks, and you can tell he wants the album to have a contemporary sound (hence Knopler and his gang). The first four tracks show's Dylan's brilliance in a Christian context. The remaining four (not including "When He Returns") show Dylan in a focused, workman like determination to come up with a collection of songs that reflect his new found faith. While there's nothing particularly wrong with these tracks, there's nothing particularly right with them either.

Instead of placing the highlights throughout the album, as he did with STREET LEGAL and SHOT OF LOVE, Dylan chose to put all the good stuff at the beginning. Perhaps the reason for this is to win sympathy for the album and to carry the record through to the end, but for this listener I just want to push stop and eject after the first four tracks have gone by. The listening frustration is more intense on SLOW TRAIN COMING because of this fact.

When Dylan strikes gold, he really hits it big time. The rest just appear as songs that anyone could have written, and sometimes the dogma makes for rather odd songs ("Man Gave Names To All The Animals"). "Man" is the most interesting track off the second side and that is because it's so strange and musically it's reggae. Other than that, while Dylan's commitment to his faith and his desire to channel this faith into his art is indeed an admirable cause, in the end there's only about a side here worth really looking at. The rest are good, just a long way from the brilliance of the first four cuts.


There are, as with most Dylan albums, some additional songs recorded that were not included. Unlike some of his albums, that wasn't a lot of surplus material left over, however. One is "Seven Days", a fair song in its own right that Ron Woods of Rolling Stone fame made a hit of. Dylan also recorded a song entitled "Trouble in Mind" and issued it as a b-side to "Gotta Serve Somebody". This song is one of the highlights of the Slow Train Coming sessions, and should have been on the album. Find it if you can. It's a great song. So is "Ye Shall be Changed" from the BOOTLEG SERIES. Both these songs are better and more enjoyable to listen too than the four workman-like songs on the second side.

This is probably the best album of the Christian Trilogy, though SAVED has some great songs. But people who don't necessarily like gospel will find more in STC than they will in SAVED, and a significant potion of his fan base will find STC easier to listen too.. The contrast between the brilliant tracks and the just so tracks becomes much more apparent in SHOT OF LOVE than SLOW TRAIN COMING. The worst material on here still stands as serviceable tracks, just not brilliant tracks. SHOT OF LOVE, however, is cluttered with material that just barely makes the cut aesthetically, yet the brilliant stuff of that album is even better than the first four songs here, so the extremes are more fully realised on SHOT OF LOVE than on SLOW TRAIN COMING. As for "Every Grain of Sand," nothing here matches that, but that is only one song and one song cannot make an album (listen to "In a Gadda Da Vida" for proof).

In relation to STREET LEGAL, this album seemed to be a natural progression. Dylan is always one for trying something different and new. Lyrically, there are cuts on STREET LEGAL is on rival with the best of his 1960s material. The last cut ("Where are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat)") shows Dylan struggling to find something in his life worth caring about. Here is the answer to that question.

Bottom line: Dylan getting religion, while spiritually the most important thing a person can do, only results in fair material with some brilliant moments. Of his three Christian albums, this is the most even keeled and consistent. SAVED is a great album, but not as accessible to people who aren't into the whole gospel scene, and SHOT OF LOVE is just too inconsistent and had too many great songs cut to make it a worthwhile listen, though it has a handful of the best songs he ever wrote, which for Dylan is saying a lot.
