Free Music Notes for The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert"Free Music Review: Now it goes something like this... Hit: 5 StarsThe acoustic set is very good but the electric set may be the best live album ever. The reworkings of his early acoustic works are wonderful and Garth Hudson is BRILLIANT on "Ballad of A Thin Man". And what can I say about the versions of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "Like A Rolling Stone"?
I hope Springsteen will release the oft bootlegged live concert recording from his 1975 Bottom Line (NYC) shows...
Free Music Review: BUY THIS, THEN BUY 1975, THEN BUY 1964...... Hit: 5 StarsThe bootleg series really cooks. At least starting with this volume. Vols. 1-3 are a meshed up mess of random stuff, like studio outakes and whatnot. They are nothing to write home about. This number is the best in the series, (which keeps continuing to grow, much to my delight).
UM I'll save you the whole story, cuz if you don't know it by now you can just read another reveiw. WHAT I WILL SAY IS THIS:
Bob Dylan did it best when he was acoustic, UNTILL he did it with THE HAWKS and that stuff just RAWKED.
PLAY F*ck*N LOUD!!!!!
volumes 5 and 6 should not be overlooked. Check back later when I get my hands on No.7.
Free Music Review: What were they thinking at CBS Hit: 5 StarsWhat were they thinking at CBS when they shelved this in 1966?
It's pure musical genius and venom at the same time. The template and the yardstick for all live albums and this one wasn't even brought out until 30 years later. 30 tears too late.
Free Music Review: my desert island disc Hit: 5 StarsI will start this review by talking about the first disk, which i think gets criminaly overlooked in most other reviews, The judas moment being the catalyst for this. This is probably the most poetic piece of art that i own which is no mean feat.Down to a combination of harmonica, voice and guitar which merges together to create a mesmerising performance of high art.The first song contains some really beautiful lines (she got everything she needs shes an artist she dont look back. she can take the dark out of the nighttime and paint the daytime black)and(she wears an egyption red ring it sparkles before she speaks)quite absurd admitadly but nonetheless magnificent. Then the disk continues through, johanna, baby blue and desolation row with every word spoken as if it were his last. The finale(Mr Tamborine man) is a real tour de force, a journey of mystic proportions even the beatles had to bow their heads.
Then came the blistering noise of the (BAND) seemingly tearing the free trade hall from its foundations. starting with (tell me momma) a raucous bar room boogie, which emphasises the contrast between the two disks.Anothe highlight of the second disk is (leopard skin pill box hat)another bluesy number with some hilarious lyrics, with a mumbling dylan introduction to quieten the disruptive crowd. And then the legendary final song which is preceded by the spine tingling call of judas, a scathing put down in its self but then transcended by the vocal response by dylan and the explosion of bile and incendiary music that is (like a rolling stone). i'm not sure if its a good starting point for someone new to Dylan. but indispensible for any Dylan fan.
Free Music Review: My favorite Dylan recording Hit: 5 StarsOut of Dylan's released studio and live material this is my favorite; disc 1 in particular.
The sound quality is excellent even by today's standards and Bob's voice and phrasing are right on.
The recording of 'Just Like A Woman' on this record is my favorite live performance of a song, ever.
