Free Music Notes for Together Through Life (Deluxe Edition) CD + DVDFree Music Review: Fantastic album...for those who "know" Dylan's current voice Hit: 5 Stars
Together Through Life is a great continuation of Time out of Mind, Love and Theft, and Modern Times. Though it may present a shock to the listener if they had suddenly jumped from his earlier work to his current period, once you get used to it, it sounds pretty damn good. For those who have ever followed his body of work know he's never really hung on to a single voice. As for me, I knew there was a huge shock when I turned on Modern Times for the first time after listening to Mr. Tambourine Man from Dylan's 1964 performance. I immediately turned it off and dismissed it. After a third and forth listen, I've grown to like his current trademark growl. After a few days, I began to grow into other albums from his recent period of work. Along with few other artists, I've always found there is a breaking in period with Dylan. You need to shake off the impression that every single artist needs to have that perfect voice. You know the sound. Give this album a second listen if you don't like it the first time. It'll break in, like that favorite couch of yours. Who knows, this might drag you into other artists who share a similar croak such as Tom Waits.
Free Music Review: Like a fine wine Hit: 5 Stars
Mr. Dylan makes no effort to hide his most eclectic side in this new body of work. Each piece is contrasted by the next so that they all zing. In these originals, The Artist lets us know that he doesn't much care if we think he's cool or not, but he is cool. Massively cool. Are you a decades-long Dylan fan who has been less-than-delighted with some of his albums? Well, this makes up for it.
The extra CD in this Deluxe Edition is spectacular. Dylan zeroes in on extremely obscure but somehow extremely influential jewels of Americana -- grout that binds all sorts of odd pieces of music together and makes you want to learn more about each facet. I found myself driving 35 miles an hour so I could hear the whole thing in one gulp. Buy this. It's as good as anything he's ever done.
Free Music Review: Join Together Hit: 5 Stars
With Grateful Dead collaborator Robert Hunter co-writing nine of the 10 tracks, Bob Dylan delivers yet another "twilight" classic that covers a range of musicial styles that are bolstered by his iconic artistry.
There is the blues (My Wife's Home Town), Tex-Mex swing (If You Ever Go to Houston), soul (I Feel a Change Comin' On) and poetry through balladry (Life is Hard). The Deluxe Edition does an old-school promotion by including a poster and sticker, with a second CD including 13 tracks from Dylan's "Friends & Neighbors" episode from the Theme Time Radio Hour and an interview DVD.
This is yet another solid exclamation point on a career that continues to have significant relevance in the fast-paced world of pop culture.
Free Music Review: Thoroughly Enjoyable Dylan Hit: 5 Stars
This cd finds Dylan in a blues/roots based collection of hot songs with a crack band including Mike Campbell on guitar, David Hidalgo on guitar and accordian, and Dylan's long-time base player Tony Garnier.
Some reviewers complain about the raw sound of Dylan's voice these days. Have they ever listened to Howlin' Wolf, Bukka White, or other blues giants? In recent years Dylan has re-created himself once again, this time as a blues/roots artist.
To those who complain that there aren't any profound life statements from Dylan on this cd I say who cares? Hasn't he given us enough of these? This is a thoroughly rocking piece of work. Compare it with most of the garbage music that is popular these days. This is the real stuff.
Free Music Review: Another genre Hit: 5 Stars
I heard people talking about the album as following the style of Modern Times, Love and Theft, and Time Out of Mind. While maybe there are some more of the themes associated with time moving on and life passing by, the style of the music is more consistent with the latest Bootleg. Both of these albums have a great rockabilly and blues-influenced sensibility not as apparent in the earlier three albums. So what we have here is now another twist in Dylan's stylings that makes for two great albums. I loved the latest bootleg and this album compliments it nicely. The band is made of stellar performers and they rock out in a really nice casual style. This is a great album.
