Free Music Notes for Live at the Roxy, Hollywood, California, May 26, 1976 - The Complete Concert

Free Music Review: Intimate Marley
Hit: 4 Stars

If this CD doesn't do it for you, you're not a true Marley fan. Not one of the many cheesy illegal bootlegs, this is the real deal -- the last truly sublime live performance put on CD. Recorded at the intimate Roxy theater in Hollywood in May of 1976, this 2 CD edition was not released, however, until 2003.

While Disc 1 provides some incredible performances, it is Disc 2 with its incomparable 23 minute live version of Get Up Stand Up that makes this CD a keepsake for any Marley fan.

Free Music Review: Really Good, Mon
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a great CD to just sit back and listen to and chill.

I mean, its got all the essential Marley gems, and the bonus 2nd disc is a treat.

Marley really was a genius and an obvious influence on scores of pop acts.

Would rate 5 stars if it were a bit longer.

Free Music Review: great show but...
Hit: 4 Stars

I don't know where the first reviewer ever got the idea that the Stones, Dead, The Beatles, and Dylan were at this show. This simply did not happen. None the less, this is a great show, catching Marley and band in their prime.

Free Music Review: Gift for a good friend
Hit: 4 Stars

I was pleased how quickly this CD arrived. It was a birthday present for a dear friend, so I haven't heard it yet, however, I'm sure it's excellent. After all, it's by Bob Marley.

Free Music Review: Mildly heretical view
Hit: 3 Stars

The good: The band is smokin' tight, the sound is up close and intimate, just as almost all the customer reviews have mentioned.

The bad: I'll cut to the chase about my disappointment--the set list.

The set list leans heavily on songs that vamp for long stretches on a couple of chords (make no mistake, the Wailers are locked into some killer grooves, its just that they aren't mixing up these grooves with some of the other things they did so well). The set list actually starts to get monotonous somewhere around 4:45 into "Want More." By the time they get into "Roots Rock Reggae", I'm thinking that while this may have been a ganja-fueled religious experience in person, it doesn't have the same effect on CD.

Obviously, there are some superior examples of Bob's songcraft here -- "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry" -- but the set list isn't varied enough to give a picture of why Bob was a genius as a songwriter as well as a guy who knew how to create a monster groove.

And as someone else noted below, Bob does sound a bit worn out during this performance.

If you are looking to expand your Bob Marley collection beyond the Island studio albums, pick up the 2002 version of "Talking Blues". It's got a 10 song set recorded live in the Record Plant for a small audience (and for broadcast on KSAN-FM in San Francisco). Peter Tosh is on board for the 1973 cuts. On these tracks, the keyboard playing is about as funky as anything Sly Stone was laying down at the time.

All the songs 'Talking Blues' are full of hooks AND deep-groovin', which is my problem with some of the Roxy material--it's killer rhythm in the service of less-than-killer material. (BTW, the other Talking Blues tracks are outtakes from the 'Natty Dread' sessions--"Talkin' Blues," "Bend Down Low," and "Am-a-Do"--and "I Shot the Sheriff", an alternate take from 'Live'). The Roxy concert may be good--a rare chance to hear prime-time Bob in a club setting--but don't miss 'Talking Blues' -- it's a sleeper, and a killer.
