makes me cry every time that I did not get to see Bob live....
Free Music Review: What the archives yield... Hit: 4 Stars
It's interesting to see what the archives can still yield after all these years. According to an interview with one of the audio restoration engineers that I read somewhere on the web, there are hundreds of hours of unfinished Marley tapes in the vaults, many of which have now been transferred to digital and are being reviewed for possible remaster and release. This is a 'legendary' show (according to the marketing copy) from 1976 at the Roxy in Hollywood. Disc 1 was previously released in 2002 as part of the Deluxe edition of Rastaman Vibration. The second disc here, containing one short track and a 25-minute medley, is what's really new in this release. The short track, a version of "Positive Vibration" is really pretty awful (terrible keyboard sound), but the 25-minute medley of "Get Up Stand Up"/"No More Trouble"/"War" is pretty excellent and the band is definitely rocking out on this encore. Overall, I'd say this isn't a bad release, but definitely aimed at hardcore Marley collectors. If you're looking to start out an essential Marley collection, you're probably better off with some of his classic live records released during his lifetime (Live! or Babylon By Bus). If you're looking for a good introduction to Marley, try the remastered version of "Legend", the one Marley compilation nobody should be without. Lastly, it's important to say here that this is definitely an "official" Marley archives release on his family's label, Tuff Gong. There are so many substandard Marley releases out there containing early material whose copyright circumstances aren't too clear that this one stands out as an interesting new release.
Free Music Review: Excellent addition to the Bob Marley live catalogue Hit: 4 Stars
"Live at the Roxy" is the third official live album of Bob Marley(after the 1975 "Live" and the 1978 "Babylon by Bus"), and it's a most welcome addition. Bob Marley is one of the best live acts, ever, and this 2CD only confirms it (13 songs, 85 min.).Fitting chronologically in between the 2 previous live albums, this is the complete recording of the May 26, 1976 gig at the Roxy, a small venue in LA (contrary to Europe, Marley never really hit it big in the US till his very late years). There are many gems here, including "Them Belly Full" (another biting social commentary by Marley), "Rebel Music" and "Rat Race" (in a better version than on "Babylon by Bus" and a track written by Bob's wife Rita). The very best is in the encore, a 23 min. medley of "Get Up Stand Up/No More Trouble/War", just fab. Oh to have been a fly on the wall on that gig! I had one opportunity to see Marley live, in 1980, in Brussels, Belgium. That concert coincided with Belgium's soccer team unprobable bid for the European championship, a once in a lifetime, and I decided to watch the game instead, thinking I'd have another chance sometime to see Marley.... I never did (and to add insult to misery Belgium lost the final). The irony! Bob Marley was a soccer affectionado. Meanwhile, enjoy this excellent live set. A must for any Marley fan.
Free Music Review: Another great LIVE Bob Marley Performance Hit: 4 Stars
For great artists, the live performance is always better than studio recordings and the Marley live recordings always deliver. Live at the Roxy is great because it has a real nice tight feel, most likely from the club setting. The sound quality is great, the crowd noise actually adds somehow to the listening experience instead of disturbing it. Live at the Roxy is a great buy and a must have for any Marley fan, however, it is not as powerful as Babylon by Bus. Babylon by Bus, in my humble opinion, is still the high watermark for available Bob Marley live recordings and is probably one of the greatest albums one could possibly own.
