Free Music Review: "Beyond profane and holy word, a thought profound, but never heard"
Hit: 5 Stars

I came in late on this CD and see Bob Mould has put out another CD since District Line (I can't keep up). I really liked Modulate and loved Body of Song. Initially I placed District Line above Modulate and just below Body of Song, but it has rarely been out of my CD player or car stereo since I started listening to it. Every song is wonderful! There is nothing weak here. I'll put this CD in and play it straight or on shuffle and am perfectly happy. As much as I like Body of Song, District Line is a bit better because it is so solid. I rarely find this in artists I've followed for a long time as I tend to like one era best and never waver, but Bob Mould has put out his best music on two of his most recent releases: Body of Song and District Line. Another thing I've noticed is how much better the lyrics are. I thought Modulate was very weak lyrically almost as if a kid wrote them (though it was fresh and offered some of Mould's best material to that date musically). District Line is strong both lyrically and musically. There are lines on some of these tracks that blow me away. "Again And Again," especially, has haunting lyrics that draw you in. The lyrics are mostly about relationships gone sour--real world stuff, but very powerful.

"Stupid Now"--Very catchy song. It is probably the most easily remembered track on the CD as I found myself humming the opening when I first started listening to the album. It is a catchy, pleasant little tune at first and then it explodes!
"Who Needs To Dream?"--This song keeps a good, speedy, steady pace and is upbeat despite the lyrics on troubled relationships that is Mould's forte: "And chasing the one who's running away while being chased by the one you don't want."
"Again And Again"--This track is very haunting to me, musically and, especially, lyrically: "I took the bullets from the carport, tossed them in my backpack...And my lawyers got the will." Anytime the song plays in the background or in the car, no matter what I'm doing, my attention turns to the lyrics. It is disturbing and powerful.
"Old Highs New Lows"--Begins like one of those fillers off Modulate, but it is not a filler. It is a laid-back, relaxing track with lyrics that give a content feel instead of the anguish of most of the songs here. "I am speechless in your beauty, you are flawless in my eyes," "I try to ignore the decay and listen harder to the tone. The pitch of your broad chest as it exhales into mine. Old highs, new lows. Ain't that how life goes."
"Return To Dust"--The opening to this song is beautiful and then it rocks! Awesome! Mould harmonizes his voice on this one and it sounds very cool.

"The Silence Between Us"--Upbeat rocker.
"Shelter Me"--Would have fit very well on Modulate as it is very restrained with the Modulate synthesizer sound.
"Very Temporary"--One of my favorites. It is upbeat and a real feel-good track although the lyrics do not follow the fun rocker at all: "Just to please you, I'd blow my brains out, this is it. Cut my heart out with a razor now."
"Miniature Parade"--I love the banging drums in the opening of this one and also the bass lines. The cello (I guess that's what it is) is a nice touch.
"Walls In Time"--Beautiful song. It would have fit well on Workbook. It reminds me a little of "Sinners And Their Repentances" which is one of Mould's most beautiful songs. I like the line "We all cry once in a while. It doesn't fit well with your smile."

District Line Poster

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Mould returns to form as a solo artist on his Anti debut. "District Line" combines the fire of his earliest work in Husker Du, the accessibility of his alternative rock, genre-defining trio Sugar, and the introspection found in his solo releases. He describes it as "stories of my simple life in a complicated town", that being his adopted city of Washington, DC. Working with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Mould has returned to the live band sound of Husker Du and Sugar to kick out ten songs that sound as youthful, energized, and immediate as anything he has ever recorded. This is a full on rock 'n' roll record, featuring members of Fugazi, and will appeal to fans of that band, as well as new fans raised on Alkaline Trio and Against Me.
District Line, Mould's seventh solo album, is a swell follow-up to his bracing 2005 return-to-rockishness record Body of Song. You'd think the guy's heart would get tired of having to beat upon his sleeve all the time--but here we are treated to ten new self-deprecating, brutally honest and often (weirdly) upbeat songs from the founder of Hüsker Dü and Sugar. It's hard not to cheer Mould on in his desire to meld electronic and hard rock elements--after all, he's been on this track for more than six years now. What's strange is that the best songs tend to be those that get lost in either genre rather than the hybrid exercises. One does wish that Mould would abandon that annoying auto-tune synthesizer thing on his voice once and for all. Though "Old Highs and New Lows" is so far towards and through modern MOR sound, it's definitely one of the more memorable tunes. The exceptionally talented Washington, DC resident busts out a few guitar-heavy crunchers that will remind old-timers of when they lost their hearing seeing either of those bands live. The best of these, "Return to Dust," should go on for longer than "Reoccurring Dreams," but is only four and a half minutes. --Mike McGonigal
