Free Music Notes for Bob Seger - Greatest HitsFree Music Review: ATTN: CAP.RECORD EXECS: Bob Seger sorely needs a DOUBLE DISC "BEST OF" or "ESSENTIAL" compilation INSTEAD of a Greatest Hits CD. Hit: 3 StarsHonestly, Mr. Seger needs to take a page out of such groups as Heart, America, Paul McCartney/Wings, Rolling Stones, plus a whole slew of other artists who recently put together a double disc "ESSENTIAL" or the "THE VERY BEST" type of compilation. The "Essential Bob Seger" would be an instant HUGE success for the long-awaited REAL best of Bob compilation that has yet to exist. This album pretty much just lists Bob's most slick, glossy singles and really does not give the average listener a chance to really get to know the GREAT Bob Seger - the most raw vocals are on the awesome "Night Moves" and of course the legendary "Turn The Page" (live). Maybe even a best of LIVE comp or a 4 disc box set would be apropos, but anything other than these two Greatest Hits CDs - the lineups are just not close to being fully represntational of this man's talent.
That being said, this CD DOES give one most of the TOP commercial hits/singles of Seger, however, arguably not his BEST. None of these songs on THIS CD really demonstrate Bob's raw vocal abilities with great rocker staples, such as "Her Strut," "Fire Down Below," "Sunspot Baby," "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Get Out Of Denver," "Horizontal Bop," "Katmandu" (the live version, of course) or "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," etc.; although a couple of those were included on "Greatest Hits 2" (which also is lacking in its track lineup). This compilation (and Volume 2) seems to be geared towards an AC (Adult Contemporary, for those of you unfamiliar with radio terms) audience versus a genuine rock crowd, or those whom Bob Seger truly garnered his mass appeal.
If you truly want a double disc best of set, for now, grab "Live Bullet" (one of, if not the best ever live rock recordings) and "Nine Tonight," which needs to be remastered and reissued as a double disc set, but that's another story altogether. Those two live/best-of CDs capture most of the essential Bob at his best. He is due yet another live album with some of his later material from "The Distance" on up as well - all we have live post-"Nine Tonight" was one solitary live track, a fantastic cover of "Fortunate Son." I own all his domestic album releases on CD and have yet to see him live, but heard he is touring again soon, maybe in support of a... BOX SET? Hmmm... crossing my fingers in anticipation for my mid-aged crisis to be fulfilled with yet another great artist I somehow missed seeing live over my four-plus decades on this planet.
Bob, you TRULY rock! Now, go find some way to convince your rec-execs to remind us all of that by thoughtfully compiling a REAL GREATEST release.

Free Music Review: Elevator music from a once-great rocker Hit: 2 StarsBob Seger produced some of the greatest rock and roll to come out of the Detroit area- songs like "Persecution Smith", "East Side Story", and one of the first, if not *the* first anti-War song of that era, "2+2". Unfortunately none of these are on this disc. Instead, what you get is songs from later in his career, after he discovered that vapid MOR ballads sold better than rock and roll. His gain, and our loss.
Free Music Review: great collection Hit: 5 StarsIf you love Bob Seger, this is the collection you want. All of his greatest songs are here. A+
