Free Music Review: Night Moves moves, night or day Hit: 4 StarsThis is Bob Seger's first studio album with his recently formed Silver Bullet Band. Only several months before NIGHT MOVES was released,LIVE BULLET,recorded in September 1975,was released. This was the last album for Silver Bullet Band drummer Charlie Martin. Martin quit the band after a paralyzing accident. I believe he had to. Now for the songs: the title track tells a stoiry about a guy(possibly Seger)and his girlfriend. THE FIRE DOWN BELOW is about two girls, one named Rosie, who's looking mighty fine, and the other named Nancy, whom a guy is walking the streets for and he'll find her every time. ROCK AND ROLL NEVER FORGETS mentions 50's rock 'n roll great Chuck Berry, who influenced Seger. MAINSTREET is another telltale ballad. SUNSPOT BABY is about a guy who was swindled by a girl he was involved with, such as "she charged up a fortune on my credit card". SHIP OF FOOLS is about life on a vessel. SUNBURST tells about a man who's a king or lives like a king. The other two songs,COME TO POPPA and MARY LOU are cool. ROCK AND ROLL NEVER FORGETS,THE FIRE DOWN BELOW,the title track and MAINSTREET were later re-recorded for NINE TONIGHT in 1980. The title track re-entered the pop charts in 1994 when GREATEST HITS was released. There was a video depicting the lyrics of the song. Sorry, there was no MTV in 1976 when the title track debuted on the radio. But there were seldom-seen music videos.
Free Music Review: Good fun Hit: 4 StarsIf you're looking for simple, straight-ahead, three-chord rock 'n' roll, Bob Seger is your man. Most of Seger's records suffer from a lack of consistency, and many of his songs simply sound too much alike. But "Night Moves" features some of the best and most original songwriting of Seger's career, and the most varied moods as well. It's not a perfect record, nor a particularly original one, but it's a good, solid rock album, alternating between up-tempo songs like "The Fire Down Below" and the excellent, fiery rocker "Rock And Roll Never Forgets", mid-tempo grooves like "Sunspot Baby" and "Mary Lou", and ballads like "Ship Of Fools", "Mainstreet" and the title track. Most of these songs can be found on Seger's two excellent live offerings, and those two remain the best way to get acquainted with his music, collecting virtually every highlight from his 70s and early 80s albums. But if you want to dig a little deeper, "Night Moves" is a good buy. One of Bob Seger's best studio albums for sure. 3 3/4 stars.
Free Music Review: In A Tie For Bob Seger's Best Hit: 5 StarsNIGHT MOVES is tied with LIVE BULLET and STRANGER IN TOWN as being one of Bob Seger's three best albums ever. The entire album, with the exception of the mediocre "Come To Poppa", is top-drawer. Songs such as "Rock & Roll Never Forgets", which extols the joys of rock & roll for full-grown men and women; the title track's description of a high-school romance and its aftermath; "Fire Down Below", a song about urban street life; "Sunburst", which is about someone who has it made; and "Sunspot Baby", which relates a tale of the anger that results from trust betrayed, all unite to form a hamonious whole. The fact that Seger, like virtually every other Midwestern, Southern, and West Coast rocker, advocates sanctions against countries which convict foreign tourists for trumped-up crimes, as well as increased funding for law enforcement, makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Free Music Review: "I Woke Last Night to the Sound of Thunder" Hit: 4 StarsThis is the album that made Bob Seger a familiar name. I liked the song "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" that I heard on the radio back in '69. I even have the LP that it's on. The group was called "The Bob Seger System" and the album is titled "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man". After that I don't recall hearing anything by Seger until this album came along. "Night Moves" is one of those classic rock songs nearly everyone has heard. But it's not the only good song here. "Mainstreet" is one of my favorites, I still find myself singing it sometimes. "The Fire Down Below" is another I always liked. I admit, I don't care for all the songs but the standouts are unforgettable and rock classics. The slowdown on "Night Moves" and lyrics are great. I think of the line "Started hummin' a song from 1962..." At the time 1962 was 14 years in the past. Now its been around 27 years since this album came out; ..."Ain't it funny how the Night Moves"......?
