Free Music Notes for Night MovesFree Music Review: Classic album for the ages Hit: 5 StarsThis album is an all-time classic. Sure, it brought the legendary Bob Seger into the mainstream, but it is absolutely vintage classic rock.Like many others, I can't rave enough about the title track, a slow gem that just oozes memories of youth. "Rock And Roll Never Forgets" is the ultimate classic rocker, and it couldn't be more appropriate considering how unforgetable this album is. "The Fire Down Below" is kind of a "raunch rocker" that Bob would get away from later on in his career. "Mainstreet" is another wistful song full of obvious memories for the man from Detroit. I can't say enough about "Sunspot Baby", the ultimate classic rocking breakup song. "She packed up her bags and took off down the road; she left me here stranded with the bills she owed" is roughly how the song begins. A breakup song with attitude is the way I can best describe this--an absolute treat and favorite. All in all, this is a legendary album from beginning to end. After all these years, I still can't say enough about it. An absolute must for those who long for the classic rock of the seventies.
Free Music Review: Bob has all the right "Moves" Hit: 5 Stars"Night Moves" is Bob Seger's breakthrough album. Released in 1976, and featuring the massive hit single of the same name, it was the record that lifted this long time little noticed blue collar rocker into mega stardom. Today, it still holds up as one of the best rock albums of the 1970s. Though not quite as good as Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," it represents the same kind of commercial and artistic breakthrough and can be mentioned in the same breath without embarassment. Other than the title track, "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and "Mainstreet" are the other two first rate singles. "Sunspot Baby" is an excellent breakup song and "The Fire Down Below" is a firery rocker. The rest of the material is first rate as well. "Night Moves" is a must own album for any fan of classic rock.
Free Music Review: Seger's Breakout Hit: 4 StarsThis album turned the commercial tide for Bob Seger, changing him from a Detroit-based cult favorite to a mainstream star. He certainly deserved it -- he's a terrific singer and "Night Moves" is not only one of his very best songs, but manages to cram wistful memories and erotic passion into one tune. Combine it with such great songs as "Rock 'N' Roll Never Forgets" and the day-in-the-life "Sunburst" and you've got some fine music. The album slows down dramatically on what would be side two if LPs still existed, however. Seger starts and finishes with two "she done me wrong" songs -- "Sunspot Baby" and "Mary Lou," in which his woman not only leaves him, but takes his car, jewelry, credit cards, etc. And I'm not sure what he was thinking with "Ship of Fools," a heavy-handed excursion into boating disaster songs. (Maybe Gordon Lightfoot decided he could release "The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" based on this tune.) The very fine "Mainstreet" is lost is this mediocre grouping. Still worth purchasing, just be prepared to program your CD player a bit.
Free Music Review: Ah the memories......... Hit: 5 StarsOkay, my purchase of this CD dates me terribly.....but I remember listening to this album when I was in college, and hearing it again brings back all the great memories of my years at the University of Michigan. Bob Seger is a classic in the sub-genre of Detroit Rock, and this album captures many of his hits and the overall energy and raw driving beat that is his signature.
Free Music Review: Seger Moves On Up Hit: 4 StarsNight Moves was Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's ticket to the big time. After years of clawing just beneath the surface, the band broke through thanks in large part to the success of their "Live" Bullet album and then the nostalgic title track. The song perfectly captures those awkward adolescent years where young boys try to make with the young girls. The song was his first top ten hit and propelled the album into the top ten as well. The album is full of wonderful songs like the declarative "Rock & Roll Never Forgets" and the wistful "Mainstreet".
