I was in a store and I heard this CD playing in the backround. I tried to ignore it but I couldn't resist the magnetic attraction to what I was hearing. At first I thought it was Sinatra but then I said (don't get mad) hey this guy is too exciting to be Sinatra. I said to the clerk who is that. She must have been about 23 years old and with a blushing excitement said "It's Bobby Darin.....isn't he great"! I had to buy it. When I got to the register I noticed that it included a DVD also. Now folks.....I remember Bobby Darin from all those Kinescope type of Dick Clark and Ed Sullivan shows doing Dream Lover and Splish Splash and the like. You know the kind....poor sound and black & white distorted image. Well I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see and hear. Take my word for it.....if you are able to get this CD/DVD you will have in your possesion one of if not the greatest entertainers "EVER"! I'M NUMB! I want him back right now....right here....today! And since that's not possible this is the next best thing. YOU POSITIVELY WILL NOT BELIEVE HOW GREAT THIS IS.....IT'S THAT GOOD! GET IT!Free Music Review: The GREATEST!!!

This set has it all! It's a great opportunity to hear and see some ultra rare performances by the versatile Bobby Darin! He truly was a MASTER of all musical styles, and this shows in the selections included here. The DVD video performances will leave you wanting more from Bobby's wonderful early 1970s variety series! The Bobby Darin Estate should start a DVD club like Carol Burnett did.Carol's great club includes TWO complete episodes on each DVD in pristine quality.It would be great to have the entire collection of ALL of Bobby's 1970s TV shows UNCUT and UNEDITED with all of the wonderful songs that he performed!Although the video performances were taped shortly before Bobby's untimely death, he is in his absolute prime! The performances are sheer magic. His duet with Petula Clark is just perfect. The film clips are excellent quality. Joel Dorn, Steve Blauner and Jimmy Scalia did a PHENOMENAL job with this release Hopefully there will be an entire Darin DVD collection forthcoming! I highly recommend this fantastic set. I heard Bobby Darin sing a song on radio, many years ago. I'd heard him live, at Sydney Stadium, in 1961, during his "Splish Splash" days. Fairly good, but just one of the pack. His stature grew with Mack the Knife, La Mer, etc. But, he grew as an artist. He interpreted, reflected, presented. So, when he sang the unusually excellent pop song,"Alone Again", with subtle feeling and great touch, I wanted to acquire a little piece of the quality of this art that is fading rapidly. Perhaps he's a pop parallel to, say, Mel Torme, but this little DVD will keep me happy, knowing I have a store of good memories, of lovely swinging songs, tender ballads, lively, jively songs to remember my old, bygone age, gone now, but not forgotten for its fine, personal, artistic standards. Darin's "Aces" is a winner; because he cared. If only care, integrity and a sense of pride still predominated more today.Free Music Review: Nice addition

The CD is a nice collection of songs, some live. I don't particularly like live songs because of the clapping and other noises, BUT! in this case, listening to Mr. Beautiful, i'm sold! His energy & generous performances come through & touch you. I will eventually purchase studio versions of his songs. But, this is also nice to have. I think it's worth the investment. The DVD is also a nice addition which includes some extra footage not seen in Beyond the Song. Beyond the Song is a must-have though. Nicely composited with songs, stories told by friends, family and his son. Tony Orlando and Andy Williams and Ahmet Ertugan speak from the heart. I have been following (and collecting) Bobby since 1958, and am so glad that I have survived long enough to see and hear this. The rare material like the live cut of Lazy River just blows me away. I have always loved Bobby's treatment of this song, but on Aces it is just so hip and so jazzy I have to play it over and over. Congratulations to all involved in bringing Bobby Darin back in such a compelling way.If you own no Darin the line forms on the right babe. Get it now.
