Free Music Notes for Darin at the CopaFree Music Review: darin swings live! Hit: 4 Stars
a great cd to add to your live collection (others include sinatra-basie at the sands and sammy davis jr with buddy rich). the only objection to be heard is that the show ends too soon! darin displays his showmanship with a wide variety of selections and doesn't restrict himself to just singing, playing the piano as well as the vibraphone on a couplpe of numbers. if this album doesn't get your toes tappin' and your fingers snappin' then, baby, you might not be breathin'!
Free Music Review: captures the feel of 1960 nightclubbing nicely Hit: 4 Stars
Darin comes out swingin' and doesn't let up. At the peak of his powers here opening with 'swing low sweet chariot' and ending with 'that's all'. A startling rendition of cole porter's 'love for sale' has the gals oohing as darin hits a homerun with this provocative title. it's the famous copa in 60' before tv took over and a performer really had to perform. uneven in spots, but a must for the true darin fan.
Free Music Review: Old Treasure Hit: 4 Stars
Many years ago I had "Darin at the Copa" on a tape cassette and liked it alot.
I was very pleased to find it so inexpensive as CD. It arrived on time, and it's as good as ever to listen to.
Free Music Review: LIve at the Desert Inn is better Hit: 3 Stars
Let me start off by saying that I am a huge Bobby Darin fan. However, I was disappointed in this CD. Bobby is great as usual but this live performance did not translate as well to a CD as others I have heard. I could tell that everyone in the audience was having a great time, but on this particular CD, only being able to listen to the audio version of his performance took away from my enjoyment of the songs. All along I kept thinking that this was one performance where you just had to be there. I realize that this is a common problem in live albums, but I have other live albums and I've never felt this way before. In any event, if you are just beginning to buy Darin CD's and want a live performance, try his Live at the Desert Inn. Even though it was made in 1971 right before he went into the hospital and he was't feeling too great, I think the CD is much better this Copa one he made in about 1960.
Free Music Review: good, not great Hit: 3 Stars
I bought this CD because I read a quote from Brian Setzer that said it "swings like nobody's business." I was jazzed to find a CD like that. This is not it. This album is good, but Darin does a few too many medleys, has little heat, and phrases like a bad Sinatra imposter; however, you could do worse.
