Free Music Review: Interesting and Different Release from RZA and the Wu-Fam

If I were asked to imagine what a west coast wu-tang group would sould like, Northstar would exceed my wildest expectations. This album was a suprise to me...I am a big wu-tang fan but have always been somewhat skeptical of the wu tang extended family's material. Sometimes RZA and his musical prospects concoct some brilliant tracks, and other times miss the mark.
I had heard Northstar before on the "Killa Bees" albums and was impressed, but never could fathom the quality of this record. Christ Bearer and Meko are a great duo and complement each other very well. As for the production, RZA, newcomer Armand Van Halen, and Mathematics have crafted a west coast wu tang sound that is very original. The great thing about this album is that it appeals to more than just the wu-tang die-hards who know what the Wu are all about...This is the kind of record that all hip hop fans can appreciate. That being said, even though the lyrics are not as dark, intricate, and complex as the original east coast wu-tang material, the album still retains the same core sound.
I'm not going to get into every track's details or which ones are best because the samples speak for themselves, but if "Nuttin" or "Black Knights of the Northstar" don't get your head bobbing, something is wrong with you. It's not a classic Wu album, but does it deserve 5 stars? Yes, because it's so damn refreshing.
