Free Music Review: A Very Solid Sophomore Effort!

After being a very big fan of Bobby's first album, I was anxiously awaiting the release of Special Occasion. After months of waiting and numerous proposed release dates, I must say that I'm very happy with the final product and the wait was well worth it.
This album is very much like his debut "Bobby Valentino" from last year. I'm finding Special Occasion to be a solid and strong album from start to finish. After hearing "Turn the Page" on the radio for weeks, I couldn't wait for more Bobby to fill my music player. With the album's intro, very reminiscent of the previous intro, the listener knows they are in for a treat. The album's second track, Wreck, is a fun and light-hearted jam. "Don't Wake Me Up" is a smooth r&b track similar to his previous tracks "My Angel" and "Want you to know me". The fourth track, "Checklist" is my favorite on the CD and sounds like a poppy Pharell/Timbaland piece, with Bobby's smooth voice over the track which is also decently long at over 5min. "Brand New" is Bobby's take on the old 70's hit "You Make me Feel Brand New" and it sounds great. The sixth track, "Hot", kind of sounds like his previous "Give me a Chance" but mixed with a faster tune (also a great party jam). "Pullin' Up" is the album's only hip-hop contribution--which I'm a fan of also, but not on smooth pop albums. The track works for what it is, and is still great. "Boy Shorts" reminds me of R Kelly's "Your Body's Callin" or Maxwell's "Sumthin Sumthin" song and is very sensual and soft. "Turn the Page" "You and Me" and "Alone" are all very strong love songs and work so well together in the middle of the album, that you won't even notice that the tracks are changing as Bobby croons his way across the love torn landscape he creates. The remaining tracks are just as smooth and catchy as the opening selections. Bobby alternates between fast, slow, and mid-tempo, so that the entire album can be played repeatedly without losing any energy. The last third of the album sounds like a classic Janet or 112 album, sweet lyrics, sensual melodies, but still happy, poppy, and easy to listen to.
There are plenty of influences in his music--listening to this CD brings back memories of Babyface, Maxwell, Prince, 112, Stevie Wonder, Jodeci, Michael Jackson, Anita Baker, New Edition, Ready for the World, D'Angelo, Brandy, Joe, and others. Bobby in my opinion, could be the new king of R&B. Sure, he may not be Luther Vandoss when it comes to vocals, but remember, even Luther had a taste for the pop/r&b sound, which this album has in spades in addition to being a consistent rhythm and blues record. I'm already thirsting for more. If you liked the first album or any of Bobby's singles, check this one out.
