Free Music Notes for For Emma, Forever AgoFree Music Review: It may be indie, but this ain't no passing trend. Hit: 5 Stars
If this album - either the story behind it, the music, or hopefully, both - doesn't move the listener profoundly, then as far as I'm concerned, the listener does not have a heart that is capable of loving a human being the way a human being wishes to be loved. It might not have been Justin Vernon's intention, but he has created something at once heart-weakening and life-affirming in "For Emma." Wear headphones and take it in. Again and again and again - I don't think I'll ever get sick of this accidental pièce de résistance.
Free Music Review: I'm playing this CD until it wears out. Then I'm buying another. Hit: 5 Stars
OK, so I'm eighteen months late buying and reviewing the CD, but here goes.
The lyrics make no sense if you read them on the page, but sung, and accompanied by music, they make all the sense you need. Gorgeous overdub harmonies and jangly folk guitar chords come together in an impressionist portrait of a broken heart. It works merely heard in the background as well as listened to with your eyes closed and the headphones on.
If you haven't picked it up yet, don't wait further. Buy now.
Free Music Review: A good soundtrack for a long Winter Hit: 5 Stars
I've heard a review say this album is kind of a mix between the vocals of TV on the Radio, with the music of Iron and Wine - I'd say that is a fair assessment. Maybe throw in a little less bleak Nick Drake too. This album was recorded in a cabin in Northern Wisconsin in the Winter and I think the music made shows that. We are in the middle of a long winter right now in Wisconsin and this album is a good soundtrack to play while I walk through the slush and try not to slip on the ice.
Free Music Review: BEST ALBUM OF 2008 Hit: 5 Stars
Well, this is something people I know agree. This has become the album of the year for 2008.
Amazing how great an album can be with so many few arrangements.
Intense, thru the music you can feel the loneliness, the sadness, the cold felt during the creation of For Emma, Forever Ago.
If I had to choose an only album from last year, I'm afraid this would be the lucky one to survive the choice.
SUPERB.
Free Music Review: Graceful, Haunting, Unique, A Blessing Hit: 5 Stars
I can't get re: stacks out of my head, and I'm sure that I don't want to. This man has made this MN boy ready to write songs again. I am so inspired by this record. I can't wait to listen to it again and again. I haven't had a disc like this in years to look forward to each time, it brings you to that special place of your own creation. Music used to transport you, and now I know that it still can.
