Free Music Notes for For Emma, Forever Ago

Free Music Review: A soothing melodic band
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't sure what to think at first, but as soon as I heard the first song, I fell in love. As I kept listening, each song got better and better. If you like music that is soft and mellow, this is the CD for you. Even if you don't particularly like soft music, you should definitely check it out. It is some of the best music I have heard in the past few years.

Free Music Review: Could be great if he'd enunciate, yes I'm aware that rhymes.
Hit: 3 Stars

Okay, hushed vocals, simple delicate melodies, understated instrumentation. I should love this album, but I don't. I'm just *meh* about it. Why, you might ask? What did this poor, sad man, hunkered down in a Wisconsin cabin, plunking away on rusty instruments - ever do to you?

Nothing of consequence.

However, upon first and repeated listenings of "For Emma, forever ago" I was extremely frustrated at Bon Iver's inability to properly enunciate his lyrics. They sounded like a garbled mess, with me and several friends only able to make out about every other sentence. Anyone can "look up" the lyrics and say they understand them, I challenge a first time listener to understand anything at all he is saying. This is frustrating because of the fact this could be a great album. This album is rife with emotion, that comes through in his vocalization and the music alone - his lyrics would complete this package. Unless he's going for a Cocteau Twins = nonsensical vocalization thing, which I highly doubt.

Before you buy this album buy, Iron and Wine's - Our Endless Numbered Days, or the Woman King EP, or The Creek Drank the Cradle for a hushed wispery vocal delight - if you're into that sort of thing. Which you obviously are if your checking this album out.

Don't get me wrong, the album is not hideous by any means - but instead lacks polish. A good producer would have made him re-record the unintelligble portions of his vocal tracks. Don't be roped in by the "emperor's new clothes."

Free Music Review: Best of 07
Hit: 5 Stars

For Emma, Forever ago was one of my favourite albums of 2007. Recorded in a cabin in the dead of winter in Wisconsin, the effects really show in the album. Old recording equipment and self recording/production results in a lo-fi sound which doesn't hinder Justin Vernon's creativity, or the complexity of the record. The isolation and introspection result in well thought out lyrics, and a common theme throughout. Double-tracked vocals and layers only make his voice that more chilling. Plain spoken words in swells and troughs make this album a superb listen. The nostalgia and intimacy of vinyl only adds to the experience of listening to this album seamlessly (besides the A to B switch). In a word, wondrous.

Free Music Review: One of the best of '08
Hit: 5 Stars

This was, by far, one of the best albums of '08. It's minimal, but inventive. Personal, but accessible. It's a completely listenable album in the era of ring tone singles. Bon indeed!

Free Music Review: Great singer/songwriter
Hit: 5 Stars

If you're looking for a song on this album that you expect to hear on the popular radio stations 30 times a day, you won't find it. But surprisingly, this is a great thing. Bon Iver's album is unique and timeless. It's very deep and definitely takes you away. It's great sleeping music too, and not in a bad way. This is an album that you don't get tired of hearing over and over. It's an album that you can listen to straight through, which is hard to come by these days. If you're looking for a new fantastic singer/songwriter, you've come to the right place.
