Free Music Review: Bon Jovi's heaviest, most melodic, and most underrated album

Since the year 2000, Bon Jovi has been best known for his return to action pop/rock smash hit "It's My Life" from the Crush(2000) album. Prior to the year 2000, we all remembered Bon Jovi for his extraordinary late 80's breakthrough album Slippery When Wet(1986), featuring several hits which defined the period. However, most fans and even the band themselves fail to properly acknowledge the period that came before Slippery, the period right before Bon Jovi hit all-time fame. This was when his first two albums, Bon Jovi(self titled-1984) and 7800 were released, but neither one received much attention, which is a shame because some of his strongest material resides amongst both albums.

7800 is different from most of the other BJ albums, in that it sported a heavier, darker sound. It stands out as being very melodic and intense, which would unsurprisingly turn off many BJ fans, but these factors would make 7800 all the better. How does it fare? Let's check it out:

1) In And Out Of Love- A very driving and anthemic hard rock opener, which is THE ONLY SONG OFF HERE THAT THE BAND STILL PLAYS. Great use of keyboards as well. 10/10

2) Price Of Love- A heavy ambient fast number with an excellent mid section and guitar solo. Not the best track, but highly underrated in my opinion. 9/10

3) Only Lonely- This track sucks you right in with its chug-along melodic guitar melodies, passionate vocals, and the backing keyboard structure. Definitely a BJ masterpiece. 10/10

4) King Of The Hill- More optimistic and catchy than some of the other tracks. It hints at what's to come on the next album. Good, but not as noteworthy as everything else on here. 8/10

5) Silent Night- 7800's only power ballad also proves to be one of his best and most beautiful power ballads ever made. WHY DIDN'T THIS TRACK BECOME FAMOUS?? Underrated for what it is. 10/10

6) Tokyo Road- Starts off with strangely uttered Japanese and music box notes and then kicks off into a great steady rocker. This is another more optimistic track which hints at Slippery When Wet. Excellent, but would've been better without the cheesy intro. 9/10

7) The Hardest Part Is The Night- POSSIBLY THE BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM. Everything comes together perfectly in this slow hard rock number, from the heavy guitars and drums, to the phenomenal vocals and keyboards. This one's a winner. 10/10

8) Always Run To You- The other fast melodic song on the album. Most people tend to overlook it, but this track makes for a fine arena rock anthem. Not bad at all. 9/10

9) To The Fire- A dark track which is driven by a cool drum beat structure, a backing synth-line, and the vocals. The melody here is one of the catchiest ones that BJ has ever crafted. 9/10

10) Secret Dreams- THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY TO CLOSE THIS ALBUM. Very melancholic and driving like "In And Out Of Love", but haunting as well. As another reviewer put it, this song will stick in your head for a while if you don't play something else immediately after. 10/10

Although I certainly agree that while Slippery When Wet and the New Jersey albums are definitely masterpieces in their own right, I feel that 7800 is truly the band's strongest work to date. Even though it's much different than any other album, I still do not understand why Bon Jovi and most fans hate 7800 so much. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this album to any fan that has an open mind for rock music. If you're looking for other albums by bands that have 7800's similarly dark feel to it, check out "Under Lock And Key" (Dokken), "Pyromania" (Def Leppard), "Pride" (White Lion), or to a heavier and more metal extent "Defenders Of The Faith" (Judas Priest).
