Free Music Notes for Have a Nice DayFree Music Review: 4.6 stars--Best Bon Jovi album in years Hit: 5 StarsAfter being one of many huge fans of Bon Jovi in the 1980s and into the early '90s, I admittedly jumped off their bandwagon in the mid-'90s when they released such lame singles as "Always" and "This Ain't No Love Song". They brought me back a bit at the start of this decade with singles "It's My Life" and "Everyday". I was able to give the albums those singles were on ("Crush" in 2000 and "Bounce" in 2002) four stars due to the quality overall musicianship of the albums, while lammenting the fact that they couldn't put together a more rocking effort beginning to end. I liked the modern vibe of their rockers and anthems on those albums; I just tired of acoustic ballad after acoustic ballad.
Now comes this album. The band followed a similar marketing strategy in releasing a similar-sounding rocker/anthem with the title track as a first single. While others have complained about the similarity of this track to other recent singles, to me it hits the mark as much as ever. It's another catchy single that to me is the best of what Bon Jovi has been about in this era. But how about the rest of the album?
For me, this album is Bon Jovi's best effort since at least "Keep The Faith", or maybe even "New Jersey". Along with the title track, I love the modern mid-tempo vibe of "I Wanna Be Loved"; the straight ahead rock of tracks like "Last Man Standing" and "Story of My Life"; and the modern rock sound of "Complicated" and "Novocaine". For sure, there are a lot of quality rockers on this album...more than at any time since "New Jersey", I would say.
While a track like "Welcome To Wherever You Are" is a decent ballad with a nice sentiment, to me "I Am" is one of the best ballads the band has ever done. This track epitomizes what I want to hear out of Bon Jovi at this point in their careers. Not another boring acoustic ballad track, but a true POWER ballad with great melodies and an awesome modern vibe. I can't rave enough about this track. (I wonder if there is any chance it will get released as a single down the line?)
"Who Says You Can't Go Home"--both versions--has truly grown on me as well. I'm not a country music fan per se, but I do like some of what may be called "country rock". For sure, the duet with Jennifer Nettles has been very enjoyable to listen to...I have gotten over the fact that this track is on the USA version of the album instead of two more rockers (neither of which I have heard to date).
I have listened to this album for months and have debated whether it deserves 4 stars or 5 stars. I chose "4.6 stars" (rounding up to "5 stars" in Amazon's rating system) because I truly believe that the guys did the best job possible in making a rock album that will both please many of their longtime fans and yet keep hold of their younger fan base. The '80s are gone forever, and Bon Jovi fans who have accepted that should enjoy this album.
Free Music Review: Here's the WHOLE SCOOP on all things Blonde Anchovi - MUST READ! Hit: 4 StarsI was going to save this for a tell-all book, but this will have to do for now. Let me first start by saying I downloaded the whole new Have A Nice DAY CD. A friend bought it and mp3'd it to me, so whether that is illegal or not is debateable, but I really don't care because I am a musician in NJ and never got a big record deal, so piss off... I encourage everyone to download every new and old album for free and PUT YOU JERKS at all of the record labels out of business and start from scratch! That's a bold statement for another day...
Getting back to the new CD - it is surprisingly good. I mean good and solid. I have spent so much money over the years on Bon Jovi stuff, I figured they owed this to me and they did!
Jon still shows his inept ability to write good or meaningful lyrics, but Richie rocks and it is a good rockin' album. Also, when Jon puts some gruff and rasp in his voice and avoids his whiney nasal delivery, the songs rock even more.
Finally, I could "allegedly" tell you how Jon and Richie really can't stand each other. How Jon prefers guitarist Bobby Bandiera over Richie "allegedly" and how they are milking their audiences for every last dime. Richie can't stand Bobby Bandiera and i understand why. I could tell you the story of how "allegedly" Jon took all of the royalties (millions) from Skid Row's first album because he and Richie wrote the album, which they did, but Richie gave his back because neither of them needed it, but Richie is a nicer guy I guess. Jon is LOADED and a tight-wad...
Allegedly this is all the tip of the iceberg and nobody idolized these guys like I did growing up, but when you move to NJ and play music for a living, you eventually hear things. Skeletons in the closet I guess...we all have them.
I ask you: How could you take a rockin' song like Have A Nice Day starts out to be and have that be the title of the song??? Jon might as well say "This title is so gay.." Richie rocks though! Peace out my peeps - 'cuz that's how I roll!
Free Music Review: Welcome back Bon Jovi Hit: 4 StarsIt took me a little while to get into this CD. I bought it initially because I loved the duet with Jennifer Nettles. It took me listening to the albumn several times before I really came to appreciate the return of Bon Jovi. It's a good CD, and worth having in your collection. Unless you are a die hard Bon Jovi fan it may take you a couple of plays before you discover that you like it and it's worth owning.
Free Music Review: Great album, just good old American rock & roll Hit: 5 StarsI love this album. "Have a Nice Day" is a good rock tune (formulaic in the tradition of It's My Life and others, but still just as fun!), "Who Says You Can't Go Home" is a feel-good tune with an addictive rhythm and chorus, "Last Man Standing" reminds me of the "Wanted" and "Blaze of Glory" tracks (although it's not a Western) and tells a good tale, and "Last Cigarette" hits home if you've ever dated someone and broken (and everyone has) and reminds me of the day after hitting the bars in NYC and Hoboken. My daughter (almost 3 yrs old) loves the album too, sings and dances to it. A real winner!
Free Music Review: Not bad Hit: 4 StarsAfter all these years, Bon Jovi still makes great rock music. Although this album isn't their best, it still has the catchy beat and lyrics which have carried the band so far. The duet with Jennifer from Sugarland is fantastic.
