Free Music Review: Even to this day, Slippery's a hellova good pop metal album

Whether you were a fan of Bon Jovi in the beginning or not, most every fan (new or old) can agree, for the most part, that Slippery When Wet was the album that defined Bon Jovi's career. Armed with four singles and a high quality production, Slippery was the band's break into mainstream success, which immediately earned them gratification from millions around the world. They had been fighting for success during the mid 80s with two unrecognized, yet equally stellar hardrock albums, Bon Jovi(1984) and 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit(1985), but the band didn't get to rest on their laurels until they unleashed Slippery in 1986.

To this day, I've had a soft spot for this album, primarily because it was one of the very first rock albums that I'd gotten into many years ago. When my dad let me borrow Slippery for a month, I became a huge fan and constantly played this album in and out everyday. However, for some strange reason I never got around to actually buying the album until now, probably being that my interest in Bon Jovi was waning as I bought more and more music over the years. But just recently I finally forced myself to fill the gap in my cd collection. Would I still have the same love for Slippery that I did when I was first introduced to rock music years ago?

You bet I would!

It was almost as if I was listening to it for the first time again. Immediately, the catchy AOR-driven, pounding anthems all came back to me the way they used to. 'Livin' On A Prayer', despite having constant radio play, still remains as my favorite Bon Jovi song of all time. It's catchy, melodic, uplifting, and rocking all in one. Now I have a much greater appreciation for the smash accoustic hit 'Wanted Dead Or Alive' than I used to, with its powerful melodies abound. Believe it or not, I actually lean more towards many of the lesser known, but equally good tracks on the album, especially 'Let It Rock', 'Raise Your Hands', 'Without Love', 'I'd Die For You', and the party rocking album-closer 'Wild In The Streets'. 'Let It Rock' opens the album nicely, sort of resembling the previous album's 'King Of The Hill' in style. 'I'd Die For You' is probably the closest thing on here to older Bon Jovi, sounding like a cross between 'Runaway' and 'Run To You' on previous albums. 'Without Love' and 'Never Say Goodbye' are both excellent ballads, the former being one of my favorites, and the latter gaining some decent radio play. The only song I never cared for was 'Social Disease' which sounds Aerosmith inspired (makes sense because I'm not that big of an Aerosmith fan). I used to like the mega hit 'You Give Love A Bad Name', but serious overplay on the radio has ruined it for me, and it just doesn't seem as good of a song as it used to.

For the most part, if you're a real Bon Jovi fan, chances are you already own this outstanding album. If not, then what are you waiting for? After this, the followup New Jersey(1988) featured some excellent rockers, though the band eventually abandoned the anthems and started experimenting with a Bruce Springsteen-esque adult contemporary sound (not a good thing for them). They were never quite the same again. However, if you're not a big fan, but you're looking for a good hardrock platter, then the first three albums shouldn't fail to please you. SWW is a pop-metal masterpiece which stands the test of time. On a side note, I may be commiting a fallacy forbidden to all hardcore BJ fans by saying this, but even as good as SWW is, my favorite ones are still the first two albums. They both have an edge lacking on future albums, that shows the band struggling for success, and this is something I really like when it comes to this sort of music. It's especially prevalent in the gloomy 7800 Degrees (shame on you Bon Jovi for shunning this masterpiece). I'm not in any way downtalking later albums, it's just that people should look at the beginnings of this band in order to see an unrivaled fire which faded away from New Jersey onwards. To this day, I consider Bon Jovi, 7800, and SWW to be Bon Jovi's prime years, and especially after listening to this album, you can see why. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
