For some albums, context is everything, especially when that context relates to either death or legacy. In the case of Bonham's ludicrously-titled 1989 debut The Disregard of Timekeeping, the context that must be considered is the fact that drummer Jason Bonham is the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. This fact has almost as much to do with how we look at the album as the music itself. It's not fair, but this is one of those albums that you really can't judge solely on its own merits. If you could, you'd probably just end up wondering how Kingdom Come managed to release this and In Your Face in the same year.
Naturally, The Disregard of Timekeeping has a very strong, very obvious Led Zeppelin influence. I think we'd have been surprised (and perhaps a bit disappointed) if it didn't. It's not as blatant as that first Kingdom Come album, or what David Coverdale would go on to do, but it's definitely there. This has a lot to do with Daniel McMaster's (RIP) vocals, which draw heavily on Robert Plant's style, as well as the hit single Wait for You, which sounds like an In Through the Out Door b-side. As the album progresses though, you get a better sense of the band's own sound, and it's actually pretty good, especially if you're a fan of 80's era melodic rock. When the band isn't trying to sound like Led Zeppelin, they're making polished, professional melodic rock on par with anything Bad Company, Foreigner and Loverboy were releasing at the time.
I find myself enjoying this disc more each time I play it. Once you get past the obvious Zeppelin similarities (which seem focused towards the beginning and end of the album), there are more than enough great melodic rock songs to please most 80's rock fans.
