I love this disc. Different from other reviewers who seem to know BPB's former works well, I do not--and therefore had no expections. I just think his voice is fantasticly rich, his lyrics very thought-provoking and his musicianship stunning. Mind you, I enjoy the Nashville sound-- and this disc does the genre well conjuring a haunting and beautiful sound without the bleek depression. If you like country, you'll love this. If you're taken by all BPB's other stuff, this may require an adjustment. For my taste, this music fits wonderfully in my livingroom on a regular basis.Free Music Review: If you wait another day, it's NOT okay

I have fallen in love with this album, from the first tone to the last. Oldham is a genius. Where his previous work made me feel bittersweet or melancholic, this album with the 'same' songs makes me happy all day long. Very rich, very nice. A perfect CD to start this summer. About a year ago or so, Drag City had a deal where you could vote for your track listing for the greatest Palace hits. Well it is a greatest hits album, but re-done in Nashville by a bunch of legendary studio musicians. Well it's an interesting concept and right away I was intrigued. I knew buying this that it would be expecting too much to assume that the songs would be improved. In fact a lot of the songs are really polished, w/high fidelity which to me detracts from the charm the originals have. But there are some moments where the results are something completely different, and interesting. The overall result is a lot like Dylan's Nashville Skyline. The similarities stretch beyond the way this records sounds...It crosses over into the same way that when it came out it challenges the audience. If you're a Will Oldham fan then you're along for the ride. Expect that he's going to turn the corner at any moment and challenge you. If you're a Will Oldham fan pick this up. As many have noted, Bonnie Billy is into spurprises and flouting expectations. He's certainly done it here. Its a testament to the performance-artist edge to his music, and to his genius, plain and simple, that this album has the critics so confused. Its a bit wearisome, though, to read one after another of the official, critical reviews complaining that this sounds so melodic and well-produced that it must be some kind of meta-irony. While its certainly true that some of the songs lack something that the original's had (e.g. "I Am a Cinematographer" has lost a bit of its original playfully wistful aspect), the fact remains that this is more than just music worth listening to; its music worth listening to, and listening to again, and again. This album has done nothing to alter my not-altogether hyperbolic assessment of Oldham: he's the greatest singer-songwriter since John Donne.
