Free Music Notes for In the Long Grass
Free Music Review: Neglected Masterpiece? I'm afraid so.

This was the swan song for the Rats, and even though Gerry Cott isn't along for the ride, Geldolf's writing has matured to the point where there are no weak spots. The lyrics are as dark as ever, and there is a certain resigned, "we know the end is coming" depression seeping through, but the rats are 100% focused. The musicianship is as sterling as ever.
The details are covered well by other reviewers here at Amazon. I'll just say that every song on the album has a killer, often startlingly original hook and reflects Geldolf's growing maturity. ("Over and Over Again," "Drag Me Down," and "A Hold of Me," are my own favorites.) The additional material is more than just interesting. "Walking Downtown," and "Precious Time," are almost up to the level of the rest of the album. So what if the single version of "Dave" is redundant? It's a freebie.
Re: track order.
If you absolutely HAVE to have the songs in the original vinyl order (and I lost my LP so many years ago that I don't remember what that order WAS;) well, you have a computer and you probably have a burner. Burn one copy of this for private, personal use and put the material in any order you like! The present arrangement made musical sense to me -- but maybe I was just glad to have access to this adventurous but accessible, thought provoking music again.
"A Tonic for the Troops" - even the domestic, CBS version and "The Fine Art of Surfacing" may be safer recommendations for someone wanting to explore the Rats, but "In the Long Grass" is more consistently satisfying. I would rate it as one of the great rock and roll albums of all time.
