Free Music Review: enjoyable if derivative Melvins rehash

I enjoyed this record immensely the first few times I heard it. OK, so they're not doing anything terribly original. OK, so they borrow more than their share from the Melvins, My Bloody Valentine and others. It's still a gorgeous, psychedelic wall of sound. But the more I listen to it the more hollow and derivative it seems. It's basically "Bullhead" by the Melvins re-invented for the sludge/drone era. Not just in terms of the spirit, the vibe or the influences but the actual content. There are songs on here that basically just lift huge chunks of "Bullhead" (particularly "Boris" and "Its' Shaved") and repackage them with more distortion and feedback. Is this a huge issue, especially for a band NAMED after a Melvins song? (I mean, it's not like they're trying to hide their influences.) Probably not. Hence my ambivalence. The thrill is there, it just wears off after a while. PINK is still a hundred times more exciting and artful and fun than anything by Pelican, High on Fire and most of the bands that play this kind of music. It's just that once you get beyond that initial visceral punch there isn't really much else there.
