Free Music Review: Great, Upbeat Sequel
Hit: 4 Stars

Rambling is a label out of Japan that's been pushing bossa and music from all over the world. They're not afraid to offer the unthinkable either, with such titles as "Copenhagen Airport" or "Scandinavian Style". They're also the home of some pretty random artists like Nu Tropic (I first heard them on a Glucklich compilation 4 years ago) and Club Brazilian Airlines. But the top two releases that Rambling has in my view are their Club Jazz A La Mode and Bossa A La Mode's. Those two offer unmixed cuts in all their glory and most importantly, the majority of the tunes on them are quality that you probably haven't heard before.

Volume three of Bossa A La Mode doesn't break the trend. It starts out cracking, with a neat version to "Tristeza" done by Greetje Kauffield. It's got a batucada/samba beat to it and a heck of a big band influence. That'll charge you up before Bob Dusi & Banda Charanga kick in with "Alegre". They were on volume 2 with one of the stronger tracks from that release and "Alegre" is one of the better ones on volume three too. Nice, easy-going and sweet. They sort of remind me of a more polished Banda Favela. That song's followed up by Tam Tam All Star (based off of Tam Tam studio) with "Samba Di Una Nota", or "one Note Samba" but this time it's in Italian? It's cheerful, and has good xylophone work on it. Another song I enoyed was Marcela's "Para Ti". This terrific singer's made quite a name for herself since singing in venues in Mato Grosso. She chips in with a romantic piece here and you can get more of her thanks to Bossacucanova. Other top cuts on this album were "Italian Kisses" by Daniele Bengi Benati and "Rio De Janeiro", pulled off of Rosalia De Souza's new album. I didn't fall for all of the songs, like Marcos Valle's Mentira (which is big because I'm a huge Marcos Valle fan) or Studio Apartment's "We are Lonely".

I enjoyed this album. It was well put together and is a very cheeful and summery selection of bossa tunes. The album is NOT mixed, so there is no cross-fading. All songs are uncut and stand-alone. I recommend it to any of the collectors out there. However, this album does come with an extremely steep price tag for a single disc. That's because it is a Japanese import. Being a Japanese import also means that the linear notes are in Kanji as well. But at least in this one you can read a bit more about who wrote the music and etc. - that information isn't in Kanji.
