Free Music Review: A rock and roll masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Boston (1976.) The first Boston studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
It was in 1976 that classic rockers Boston released their debut album - and with such, released a classic rock album that has more than stood the test of time. For years, the album held the record of best-selling debut album of all-time! The band had begun roughly seven years prior, when an engineering and guitar genius named Tom Scholz joined Barry Goudreau's band Mother's Milk. Although the initial pairing of these individuals accomplished nothing remarkable, one thing led to another, and Boston was ultimately formed. When the band released their 1976 debut album, it was an era in which music was changing - disco was fast becoming the favored music of the American listeners. But with their record-shattering debut, Boston saved rock and roll. Does the album live up to the hype listeners create around it? Read on for my review of the debut!

OVERVIEW:
Boston released their self-titled studio debut album on Epic Records on August 25, 1976. Tom Scholz and John Boylan. For the debut album, the band consisted of Tom Scholz, Brad Delp, Barry Goudreau, Sib Hashian, Jim Masdea, and Fran Sheehan. Roger Huyssen provided the now-classic cover artwork. Tracklist for the debut album consists of More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Rock And Roll Band, Smokin', Hitch A Ride, Something About You, and Let Me Take You Home Tonight.

REVIEW:
There are many excellent classic rock albums out there, but this is one of the few that can be considered a quintessential classic for the ages. Not only are all of the songs on Boston's debut excellent, they all became huge radio hits, and to this day, every one of these songs still gets played on the radio on a regular basis! Quite honestly, this is the only album I know of with which I can say that. From start to finish, this is an album that will take a hold of your attention span and never let go. It's just a shame the band never created another album that matched the popularity of this one. Oh, well. Let's take a look at the songs that comprise the band's now-classic debut.

-SIDE ONE-

-More Than A Feeling: The opening song of the album requires no introduction whatsoever. This is, hands down, Boston's biggest hit, not to mention one of the most popular classic rock pieces of all time. It's a melodic rock ballad, and definitely one of the finest of its era. This piece stands out, even amongst all of the other classics featured here. A true rock classic.

-Peace Of Mind: Another rock classic, and another huge hit for the band. Tom Scholz and Barry Goudreau really show off their guitar-playing abilities in this one, and it's also a chance for Brad Delp to shine on the vocals. After you give this song a listen, it isn't hard at all to see just why the song became as popular as it did. A great little tune.

-Foreplay/Long Time: This song is a stand-out piece for the album, on account of its sheer uniqueness - and the fact that it's two tracks in one. The opening Foreplay sequence is an organ-heavy instrumental sequence, in which every member of the band gets a chance to display their musical expertise. From there, it fades into Long Time, which is a nice little melodic rock tune. It's the longest song on this album, and from the beginning to the end, it never gets dull. Good stuff.

-SIDE TWO-

-Rock And Roll Band: And here we have the classic tune, in which the band tells the tale of their rise to rock greatness. The lyrics here are priceless, and the way Brad Delp sings them only adds to the piece's excellence. As far as songs go about musical artists singing about themselves, this is definitely one of the finer ones.

-Smokin': Straight-up classic rock the way it was meant to be heard. Although this particular song was never as big a hit as some of the earlier pieces that appeared on the album, it was still a fairly popular one in its own right. There are many tracks on this album which are nice showcases for the guitar abilities of the band, and this one is no exception. THIS, my friends, is the way classic rock was meant to be experienced.

-Hitch A Ride: Here we go back to the slower stylings, and the band manages the transition excellently. The track is heavily acoustic, and in its duration, stands as one of the finest melodic rock pieces of its era. Granted, it's not one of the more popular tunes on the album, but that means nothing - it still managed to be popular in its own right, and the song itself is pure musical genius.

-Something About You: Melodic and electric collide, and the end results are astonishing. One of my favorite things about Boston was their ability to create straightforward rockers as well as more melodic rockers alike. This song isn't one or the other, but rather the happy medium between the two. Ultimately, this was probably the least popular songs on the album, but even the least popular song on this album manages to be more popular than the most popular song on some albums! A true masterpiece, despite its lack of popularity in comparison to some of the other songs.

-Let Me Take You Home Tonight: The album's closing track is one of its finest pieces. Very slow and very melodic, the piece sounds drastically different from the other tracks, but at the same time, it is distinctly a Boston song. Every song on this album has to be heard to be appreciated, and this one is no exception. It makes for a damn fine way to close out the classic album.

OVERALL:
In the end, this album is a classic. Truly, this is one of classic rock's high points. No other effort the band released would even come close to matching the popularity or success of the debut album. It's not surprising to see that these songs still get played on the radio on a regular basis, or that the album still sells tons of copies. If you're at all a fan of classic rock, this is one of those albums that must be added to your collection. No classic rock collection is a true classic rock collection unless it features this album. Final verdict? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
The good news? They finally remastered and reissued the album. The bad news? The remaster has no bonus tracks. You'd think as much time as they took to put out a remaster, they could have found SOME kind of material to use as bonus tracks. Oh, well. That does hurt my opinion of the remastered version somewhat, but it doesn't change my mind about loving the album.
