Free Music Notes for Motown A Journey Through Hitsville USA

Free Music Review: Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear when Motown truly was "The Sound of Young America".
Hit: 5 Stars

Once upon a time four talented young students at Philadelphia's High School of Creative and Performing Arts formed an R & B vocal quartet. Before long Michael, Nathan, Wanya and Shawn would come to be known as Boyz II Men. And the rest as they say is rock and roll history. Throughout the 1990's Boyz II Men would amass an impressive total of ten Top Ten hits on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. Remarkably, five of these tunes would make it all the way to number one!! In 2004 Michael McCary would be forced to leave the group due to a chronic back ailment. Fast forward to the fall of 2007. Boyz II Men is now a trio and Decca Records releases the groups latest album "Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA". This disc features a baker's dozen of some of the most enjoyable Motown tunes of all time. It is an absolute joy to listen to!
Of all of the songs on "Motown" perhaps my favorite is the remake of Stevie Wonder's 1967 smash "I Was Made To Love Her". I had never heard any other artist do this tune and the guys prove to be more than equal to the task. Outstanding! I also thoroughly enjoyed the groups rendition of Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)". This 1962 classic was really Motown's first big hit and Boyz II Men inject new energy into this venerable tune. Among my other favorites on this disc are "All This Love", "It's The Same Old Song/Reach Out, I'll Be There" medley and most especially "War". This 1970 anthem originally recorded by Edwin Starr has never sounded better! And I would be remiss if I failed to make mention the final track on this disc. Brian McKnight leads the guys in a memorable acapella version of Boyz II Men's biggest hit "The End of The Road." Fans of group harmony will find this track to be simply irresistable.
"Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA" proves to be one of those rare albums with multi-generational appeal. Younger fans who enjoyed the groups work in the 1990's will certainly not be disappointed. And those of us who are quite a bit older and purchased these original Motown 45's when we were teenagers will enjoy this disc as well. I thought that most of the arrangements were outstanding and the vocal performances stunning. Having said that I am sorry to report that according to my ears special guest Patti Labelle's performance on "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" left a lot to be desired. But that one minor negative aside "Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA" turns out to be one of the most enjoyable new discs I have heard in quite some time. I think you will agree. Highly recommended!

Free Music Review: Boyz II Men - 20 years in the business
Hit: 5 Stars

Hey, this is Billboard Magazine's most successful music group of the 1990s! Damn, I grew up with Boyz II Men. Remember "End Of The Road", "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye", "In The Still Of The Nite", "I'll Make Love To You", "On Bended Knee", "Water Runs Dry", "Doin Just Fine", "4 Seasons Of Loneliness". BY the way, all of these classic ballads can be found on Boyz II Men - Legacy: Greatest Hits Collection!

Cooleyhighharmony (Plus Spanish Tracks), II and Evolution are classic Boyz II Men material from the 90s with sensual ballads and great harmony. After the underrated Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya and an average album Full Circle, Michael McCary left the group due to health reasons?!? and Boyz II Men went on as a trio an released an old school/cover album entitled Throwback. But now on to the rating of this particular album...

Boyz II Men managed to find the right balance of groove/uptempo tracks and those sensual ballads again! On this Motown Greatest Hits album the boyz jam and harmonize on classics, such as the Temptations' "Just My Imaginations", Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me", Stevie Wonder'S "Ribbon in The Sky", DeBarge's "All This Love" and of course their very own "End Of The Road (Acapella)". It is great to hear the boyz in top form again, singing straight from their hearts.

I really hope that's it's true that Boyz II Men are about to reunite and put out a 20th anniversary album!

Free Music Review: Boys II Men Grove to Motown Rhythm & Blues
Hit: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this CD. I can barely finish playing the 1st song, Just My Imagination, without hitting reverse to listen to it again....and again. Nathan "Alex Vanderpool" Morris, Shawn "Slim" Stockman, and Wanya "Squirt" Morris do their thang. Although I can't help but wonder how great it would have been to have Michael "Bass" McCary apart of this wonderful journey through Hitsville USA.

The harmony is what you would expect from Boys to Men and they've added their special touch without taking away the authencity of some of the greatest music in R&B...the Motown Sound. They collaborated nicely with Pattie Labelle on Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing. Also I love how they collaborated with Brian McKnight on their own award winning, End of the Road, in a capella. It's the last song...great touch.

Get this CD, you will not be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Great Comeback for Boyz II Men!
Hit: 5 Stars

Boyz II Men's new album undoubtedly demonstrates their musical talent. Their previous album the Remedy was horrible. They need to stick to producing music like they have done on previous albums (such as CooleyHighHarmony, II, Evolution, Nathan Michael Shawn & Wanya, Full Circle, and Throwback). I'm a huge fan of classic R&B and Soul, and albums like Throwback and Motown A Journey Through Hitsville USA are remarkable. What I like the most about Throwback and Motown A Journey Through Hitsville USA are how Boyz II Men put their own musical style into it, but stay true to the original songs. Now a day's too many artists are recreating classic hits, and are butchering them! If you want to enjoy an entertaining and easy listening CD then Boyz II Men's Motown A Journey Through Hitsville USA is for you!

Free Music Review: SOOOOOOOO worth the wait!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Ever since I saw them live in Mississauga singing these Motown Hits I was waiting for this album to come along. I picked it up the day it released just before my Tuesday 3 hour commute and those 3 hours flew by like nothing!! Their voices are incredible and that acapella "End of the Road" is just such a treat. Beautiful... it's perfect, simply put. Whether you're in the mood for something smooth and soulful or something upbeat that you can move to - this is it. This is the album. It's been playing in my car since November 13th and I am not planning on taking it out anytime soon... unless my car breaks down!! I've never heard any amount of voices come together so perfectly - no one can come close to these guys.
